Başiskele Coast

Başiskele Coast, while having a natural bay structure on the southern shore of Izmit Bay, is largely an urban coastal strip developed by the municipality. The ground consists of asphalt and concrete walking paths, grassy areas, and a concrete shoreline. It should be noted from the outset that it is a developed coastal strip, not a natural sandy beach.

The Samanlı Mountains rising on the opposite side of the bay provide a natural backdrop to the coast. Palm trees have been planted along the shore; these trees provide both shade and create a unique visual atmosphere for the coast. The bay water is calm and waveless; boat traffic can be seen from time to time.

Spring and summer are the most suitable times to visit the coast. Between April and June, the weather is mild, and crowds have not yet intensified. In July-August, the coast is packed; during this period, early morning hours are both cool and quiet.

Autumn can be rainy; the concrete ground becomes slippery when wet, so it is necessary to choose non-slip shoes in winter and autumn. In winter, the coast is empty, the bay view becomes clear, offering an interesting atmosphere for photography. Sunset hours provide the most beautiful light in every season; the silhouette of the Samanlı Mountains becomes particularly prominent at this time.

Başiskele can be reached from Izmit city center by Kocaeli Metropolitan Municipality buses. For those arriving by private car, parking areas are available along the coast; they can fill up on weekends, so arriving early is an advantage. It is approximately 1.5 hours away from Istanbul via the D-100 or TEM highway.

The trail is 2.4 km long and completely flat. The walking corridor and bicycle lane are separated. Since the ground is asphalt and concrete, there are no natural obstacles like mud or rocks. In terms of difficulty, the trail is suitable for all ages and fitness levels; disabled vehicles and baby strollers can also pass easily. Going and returning the entire trail covers approximately 5 km.

Since the ground is flat and hard-surfaced, special walking boots are not necessary; comfortable sports shoes are sufficient. In rainy weather, the concrete surface can become slippery, so opt for non-slip shoes during these periods. Walking in sandals or flip-flops may cause discomfort over long distances.

In summer, the UV effect increases as the sun reflects off the bay; bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses. There are drinking water sales points and cafes on the coast, but it is still recommended to bring your own water bottle. If you are coming with children, there are playgrounds and large grassy areas; non-slip shoes are also applicable for children.

The observation deck on the coast is the best spot to frame the bay and the Samanlı Mountains with a wide angle. At sunset, the mountain silhouette turns golden; to capture this light, you need to be at the observation deck 30 minutes before sunset.

The coastal strip lined with palm trees also creates interesting shadow plays during the day. In the morning, as the bay is calm, reflection photos can be taken. Weekday mornings, when crowds are sparse, are ideal for long exposure experiments. The lights of industrial facilities on the opposite side of the bay create an interesting contrast in night shots.

There are railings and barriers along the coastal strip; however, small children should not be left unsupervised near the water. There is no designated swimming area on the coast; swimming is not recommended as the bay water may carry visible pollution.

Although the bicycle path and walking corridor are separated, these boundaries are sometimes violated in crowds on weekends; be mindful of cyclists. There is lighting along the coast, so it is safe to walk in the evening. It is possible to come with pets; leash regulations must be followed. Children's playgrounds are scattered at various points along the coast, and the ground is generally supported with rubber surfacing.
