Seyrek Castle

The best time to visit Seyrek Castle is during the spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) months. The weather is neither too hot nor too cold; the mountainous walk required to reach the castle is much more enjoyable under these conditions. Although the Black Sea coast remains cool in summer, the area can get quite crowded on weekends. In winter, roads may become difficult due to rainy and foggy weather. Since the view opening to the Black Sea at sunrise and sunset is particularly impressive, we recommend planning your visit time accordingly.

The most practical way to reach the castle is by private car. Those departing from Istanbul can head towards Kandıra via the D-100 or TEM highway and then proceed towards the Black Sea coast; the total distance is approximately 157 km. The castle is about 55 km from Kocaeli (Izmit) center and 12 km from Kandıra town center. Minibuses departing from Kandıra may provide transportation to the area; however, since the last few kilometers may require walking, renting a car or using a private vehicle would be a more comfortable option.

Seyrek Castle itself is sufficient for a 1-2 hour visit. When combined with other natural beauties on Kandıra's Black Sea coast, the area can turn into a full-day itinerary. You can visit the castle in the morning, then explore the surrounding coastline, and take a break in Kandıra town center at noon. Planning it as a day trip from Istanbul or Kocaeli center is the most common choice.

For those who want to plan a short tour centered around Kandıra district, the following itinerary can be suggested: First, visit Seyrek Castle, then walk along the Black Sea coast. Since there are also picnic areas in the region, it is practical to bring ready-made food with you. Throughout the day, you can also visit Kandıra's coastal villages and end the day by watching the sunset from the castle in the evening.

Seyrek Castle, with its location on a peninsula extending into the Black Sea, offers a natural photographic frame. Views looking out to sea from the eastern facade of the castle at sunrise, and angles taken from the western direction at sunset, yield the most striking shots. The points where the castle walls meet the sea are suitable for both architectural and landscape photography. It is possible to frame the entire peninsula with a wide-angle lens or telephoto.

Since the castle is an open-air site, no official maintenance or regulation services are offered. As reaching the castle may require passing through mountainous and uneven terrain, sturdy shoes are essential. Since there are no facilities such as toilets, kiosks, or cafes in the vicinity, bring enough water and snacks with you. Check the weather forecast in advance, as the ground can become slippery in rainy weather. Be careful not to damage the structure when walking on the castle ruins.

There are no restaurants or cafes immediately around Seyrek Castle. In the nearby Kandıra town center, you can find dishes unique to Black Sea cuisine in local restaurants. There are also small fish restaurants in the coastal villages. The area is quite suitable for those who want to picnic; you can shop in Kandıra and take a break in the natural areas around the castle.
