Sultan Sazlığı Bird Paradise is an important wetland and national park located 70 km south of Kayseri at the foothills of Mount Erciyes, home to 301 bird species and 400 plant species.
Sultan Sazlığı stretches as a wetland area in the middle of the Develi Plain, varying between 8 and 13 hectares depending on the season. Situated between the district borders of Yeşilhisar and Develi, this national park is considered one of the most valuable nature conservation areas not only in Kayseri but in all of Turkey. Hosting 301 bird species every season, the reed bed is also home to many endemic plant species.
Flamingos are among the most iconic birds of Sultan Sazlığı; however, the diversity of species that can be observed here is much broader. Birds that complete their feeding, sheltering, and breeding cycles in this area attract local and foreign birdwatchers to the region throughout the year. Annual photography competitions also reveal how important a center Sultan Sazlığı is for nature photography. There is also a Bird Paradise Museum in the area; the museum welcomes visitors with exact replicas of 40 bird species living in the national park and a technologically equipped introductory section.

Guide's Note
When to Visit?
The most productive periods to visit Sultan Sazlığı are the spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) migration seasons. During these periods, both the diversity and density of bird species reach their peak; many species migrating between Europe and Africa stop at this wetland. Flamingos can also be seen during the summer months. In winter, the area becomes desolate, but it is still possible to encounter some overwintering water birds. Since birds are much more active in the morning, morning visits are much more productive compared to midday.
How to Get There?
Sultan Sazlığı is approximately 70–75 km from Kayseri city center. Coming by private car is the most common and practical method: From Kayseri, head towards Develi and then proceed in the direction of Yeşilhisar to reach Ovaçiftliği Village. It can also be easily reached by rental car from Kayseri Airport. Public transport connections are quite limited; after finding a minibus to Develi, a taxi or private car is needed for the remaining distance to the area.
Photography Spots
Sultan Sazlığı stands out as one of Turkey's most prestigious nature photography locations; the fact that an international photography competition is held here every year proves this. The observation towers in the area offer the best angles for framing flamingo flocks and water birds. A long-focus lens (at least 400 mm) and binoculars are definitely useful. The morning light reflecting on the reed bed creates ideal conditions for both bird photography and landscape shots.
Bird Paradise Museum
The Sultan Sazlığı Bird Paradise Museum located in the area is a worthwhile stop before or after visiting the national park. The museum exhibits exact replicas of 40 bird species living in Sultan Sazlığı; in the technologically equipped introductory section, it is possible to learn about the ecology of the region and the importance of wetlands. The museum, which also attracts children, makes the visit more comprehensive.
What to Eat Nearby?
There are no comprehensive dining options immediately near Sultan Sazlığı. If you plan a long trip, it is advisable to bring food and plenty of water with you. Local restaurants are available in the district centers of Develi and Yeşilhisar; mantı and pastırma dishes, symbols of Kayseri cuisine, can also be found in these districts. On your return to Kayseri city center, stopping by the city's famous mantı and sucuk masters can become a pleasant habit that completes the visit.
Things to Pay Attention To
Sultan Sazlığı is a national park and natural protected area; it is necessary to avoid any behavior that could harm the wetland. Do not stray from designated paths and observation points, and avoid sudden movements and loud noises that could disturb the birds. The region can be quite hot in summer; bring sunscreen, a hat, and plenty of water. Choose appropriate footwear as the ground can be wet and muddy in places.
How Many Days to Allocate?
Sultan Sazlığı alone can be explored in half a day to a full day. A full day is sufficient for those who want to dedicate serious time to birdwatching and photography. When included in a Kayseri trip, planning 2 full days, along with the historical and cultural sites in the city center, allows for a comfortable visit to both Sultan Sazlığı and Kayseri.
