Istanbul Toy Museum

Poet Sunay Akın traveled the world for 20 years to realize his dream of establishing a toy museum. Antique toys he collected from more than 40 countries, from France to Japan, America to Germany, are now exhibited in a historic mansion in Göztepe, Kadıköy. The museum also carries symbolic significance by opening its doors on April 23, 2005 — National Sovereignty and Children's Day.

As one of Turkey's first and most comprehensive museums in this field, the Istanbul Toy Museum appeals not only to children but also to adults. Moments when you stand in front of the display cases and remember your own childhood are inevitable. The museum is also a member of the Association of Toy and Children's Museums and is an internationally recognized institution.

Visiting the museum on weekday mornings offers the most comfortable experience. Especially during school holidays, weekends, and public holidays, visitor density significantly increases. If you are coming with your children and want a less crowded visit, you can choose a time close to opening hours on Tuesdays or Thursdays.

The most enjoyable period of the year is the spring and autumn months; the weather is pleasant, and exploring the streets of Kadıköy before or after the museum visit is much more enjoyable. For tourists visiting Istanbul in the summer, the museum has also become one of the indispensable stops on the Anatolian Side.

The museum is located in the Göztepe district of Kadıköy. Transportation by public transport is quite practical. You can reach the museum by taking the Kadıköy metro to Göztepe station and then walking for approximately 7 minutes. Alternatively, IETT buses numbered 10B, 10S, 14ÇK, 17, 17L, 19F, 19M, 19S, GZ1, GZ2, ER1, and ER2 also serve stops near the museum.

If you are coming from the European Side, the Kadıköy ferry is both an economical and enjoyable option. From the pier, you can take the metro or bus and reach the museum in a short time. For those coming by car, there are paid parking areas nearby; however, considering the narrow structure of Göztepe streets, public transport is always more practical.

The Istanbul Toy Museum is located near one of Kadıköy's most vibrant districts. After your museum visit, you can head to the cafes and restaurants around Moda and Bahariye. In Göztepe, there are also small cafes and patisseries that suit the calm atmosphere of the neighborhood and preserve its local character.

Don't forget that you are within walking distance of Kadıköy Market; in the historic market, in addition to street delicacies like fish sandwiches, stuffed mussels, and fresh fruit juice, many taverns and restaurants where you can sit and eat are also waiting for you.

The historic mansion architecture of the museum offers beautiful shots even from the outside. Inside, each room is a separate photo opportunity; antique toy display cases, colorful doll collections, and nostalgic decorations create wonderful backdrops for both children and adults.

The museum is closed on Mondays, so be sure to include this in your visit plan. It opens at 10:00 on weekdays and 10:00 on weekends; closing times are 18:00 and 18:30 respectively. Last entry is recommended at least 30 minutes before closing.

Due to the historic mansion structure, accessibility for disabled visitors and stroller use may be limited.

You can use the Istanbul Toy Museum as a great starting point for exploring Kadıköy. Visit the museum early in the morning, then take a short walk along Moda Coast. For lunch, dive into the narrow streets of Kadıköy Market; wandering among fishmongers, delicatessens, and spice shops is an experience in itself.

In the afternoon, you can shop on Bahariye Street or relax in one of Moda's quiet cafes. Ending the day by enjoying the Bosphorus view from Kadıköy Pier and taking a ferry to the European Side would also be a nice conclusion.
