The most enjoyable time to visit Istanbul Modern is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is mild. During these seasons, the Bosphorus view from the museum's terrace is at its clearest. On weekends and school holidays, the museum becomes noticeably crowded; for a calmer experience, it is advisable to choose weekday mornings.

On Fridays, the museum is kept open until 20:00. Thanks to this Long Friday practice, it becomes possible to visit after work and watch the sunset from the terrace. Istanbul Modern was founded by the Istanbul Foundation for Culture and Arts (İKSV) under the leadership of the Eczacıbaşı family and opened its doors on December 11, 2004, in Warehouse No. 4 in Karaköy. As Turkey's first modern and contemporary art museum, the institution closed its old building in 2018 and awaited the construction process of the new structure. On May 4, 2023, it reopened to visitors in its modern building within Galataport Istanbul.

The collection includes works in painting, sculpture, photography, design, architecture, and new media. In addition to the permanent exhibition area, temporary exhibitions for international and local artists, expert-led tours, educational programs, and a cinema hall position Istanbul Modern as a multi-layered cultural center. The museum, neighboring the Mimar Sinan Fine Arts University and Tophane-i Amire Culture and Art Center, reinforces Tophane's artistic identity.
