Çamlıca Hill

Çamlıca Hill can be visited in any season of the year; however, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the most comfortable periods in terms of both visibility and temperature. In winter, fog and clouds can sometimes obscure the view; in mid-summer, heat and crowds intensify together.

The time of day is as important as the season. At sunset, the light falling on the Bosphorus and the silhouette of the bridges create an extremely impressive view. Early morning hours are ideal for a quiet visit away from the crowds; at these hours, the layer of fog over the city also creates a distinct atmosphere.

IETT buses numbered 11A and 11B departing from Üsküdar square go directly to Çamlıca. To reach Üsküdar, you can use Marmaray, metro (M5 line Üsküdar station), or a ferry from the European side.

For those coming by private car, there is a parking lot on the hill; however, it is often full on weekends and holidays. Therefore, coming by public transport or taxi is often more practical. It is possible to reach the hill from Üsküdar by taxi in about 10-15 minutes for a short fare.

The main observation terrace of Çamlıca Hill offers the widest angle where you can capture the Bosphorus, both bridges, the Maiden's Tower, and the Prince Islands in the distance in the same frame. For sunset photos, west-facing viewpoints yield the best results; the golden light on the bridges creates a very dramatic image at these hours.

From the observation deck of Çamlıca Tower, 360-degree panoramic shots can be taken. The mosque's courtyard and minarets also offer strong photographic compositions for those interested in architecture. The city skyline rising through layers of fog in the morning hours also provides very impressive shots.

There are several tea gardens and cafeterias on Çamlıca Hill. The traditional Turkish tea and simit duo are indispensable at these venues. Some tea gardens also serve light snacks such as gözleme and börek.

Keep in mind that prices are a bit higher compared to the city center. For those who want a more comprehensive meal, the Üsküdar bazaar and its surrounding restaurants offer many more options; it's a sensible plan to go down to Üsküdar for a meal after visiting the hill.

1.5 to 2 hours is sufficient for just enjoying the view and a tea break. For those who want to visit the Çamlıca Mosque inside, walk in Küçük Çamlıca Grove, and go up to the observation deck of Çamlıca Tower, half a day allows for a more relaxed plan.

Combining Çamlıca Hill with a visit to Üsküdar is a very common itinerary. Visiting Üsküdar in the morning and watching the sunset on the hill in the afternoon is a great way to make the most of the day.

Start your morning at Üsküdar pier; after visiting the Mihrimah Sultan Mosque and Üsküdar bazaar, have lunch at one of the fish restaurants there. In the afternoon, take the 11A bus to Çamlıca, visit the Çamlıca Mosque, and then wait for the sunset on the observation deck.

If you have more time, you can also go up to the observation deck of Çamlıca Tower. In the evening, going down to Üsküdar, walking along the coast, and crossing to the European side by ferry or Marmaray makes for a beautiful conclusion.

On weekends and public holidays, the hill gets very crowded; finding parking can be difficult, and waiting times at tea gardens may increase. If a weekday visit is possible, you will have a much calmer experience.

If you plan to visit the Çamlıca Mosque, remember to wear appropriate clothing; a headscarf is required for women. In winter, the hill can be windy, so it is recommended to bring an extra layer of clothing. Entry to the Çamlıca Tower observation deck is subject to a separate fee, so plan your budget accordingly.
