Kozanlı Mosque

The ideal time to visit Gaziantep is between April-May and September-October. In summer, the weather in the city can be quite hot and oppressive; it is advisable to prefer morning hours during this period. Since Kozanlı Mosque is an active place of worship, instead of planning your visit during busy prayer times like noon and afternoon prayers, choosing intervals between prayers will make both you and the worshippers more comfortable.

The mosque is located on Kastelbaşı Street in the Kozanlı Neighborhood of the Şahinbey district. It is within walking distance from Gaziantep city center. Public buses and minibuses can be used for city transportation; it is possible to reach the mosque with a short walk after getting off at stops near Şahinbey center. The most striking photographic detail of Kozanlı Mosque is the black-and-white stone masonry on the door leading to the last congregation area. This contrasting stone craftsmanship is a tradition unique to Gaziantep and provides very impressive images in close-ups. A wide-angle lens is useful for framing the entire minaret from the courtyard side. If you want to photograph the mihrab in the interior, avoid using flash; natural light gives much warmer results. Taking photos during prayer times is not appropriate.

Kozanlı Mosque can be made part of a walking route covering Gaziantep's historical mosques. Starting from the city center, after seeing Gaziantep Castle, you can follow the historical neighborhoods to reach Kozanlı Mosque. By adding other historical structures and bazaars in the vicinity to this route, you can create a full half-day walking program. Since most of Gaziantep's historical mosques are located close to each other, it is possible to see several of them in a single day.

Around Kozanlı Mosque and in the historical neighborhoods of Şahinbey, there are many local restaurants and kebab shops offering the indispensable flavors of Gaziantep cuisine. Pistachio baklava, katmer, and Antep-style lahmacun can be found everywhere in the city. Being close to the historical bazaar area, you don't have to go far for a bakery breakfast or a local kebab experience after your visit.

While Kozanlı Mosque is a tourist attraction, it is primarily an active place of worship. You need to take off your shoes when entering; therefore, choose shoes that are easy to put on and take off. Female visitors are expected to wear a headscarf; if there is no covering at the mosque entrance, it is practical to carry a scarf with you. It is not appropriate to walk around and take photos during prayer.

Kozanlı Mosque embodies the typical elements of Gaziantep's historical mosque architecture. The most distinctive feature of the structure is the black-and-white cut stone masonry used on the door leading to the last congregation area. This technique is an integral part of the city's traditional building culture and represents an aesthetic understanding encountered in many historical structures in the region. The last congregation area is built with a flat ceiling. The minaret, rising next to the courtyard entrance, has a polygonal body and a single balcony; with its unadorned structure, it presents a simple but original appearance. The mihrab in the interior stands out with its meticulous detailing, reflecting the stone craftsmanship of the period.
