The vast majority of visitors emphasize that the site remains in the shadow of popular destinations like Göbeklitepe and does not receive the attention it deserves. Although the excavation area is smaller in scale compared to some archaeological sites, its location surrounded by the Syrian border and the active research environment add a special meaning to the visit.
Since the area is located within a military zone, you will tour with a guide during your visit. Photography is generally allowed; only military facilities are prohibited from being photographed. The road from Gaziantep is largely four-lane and well-maintained; the alternative route along the Euphrates offers a slower drive due to frequent speed bumps in residential areas. Visitor density is quite low; you can explore the area almost alone in the morning hours.

Karkamış district is located approximately 100 km southeast of Gaziantep city center, on the banks of the Euphrates River. Private vehicle is the most comfortable option; you can reach the district by following the D400 highway. Although there are regular bus services from Gaziantep to Karkamış, their frequency is limited; an additional vehicle may be needed to reach the ancient city from the district. Due to the region's proximity to the border, you may encounter military checkpoints along the route; keep your ID with you.
What to Eat in the Region
Karkamış district center is a small settlement; do not expect large restaurants. Traces of Gaziantep cuisine are also felt here: you can find lahmacun, katmer, and various kebabs in local eateries. If you are planning a long trip, we recommend taking snacks and water with you before leaving Gaziantep city center. Sales points around the ancient city are extremely limited.
