According to anecdotes, when Evliya Çelebi came to Harput, he sat in the shade of this plane tree and took his travel notes here. This is, of course, a difficult legend to verify. But considering that Harput has been a stop for travelers and voyagers for centuries, it is not impossible. The mosque was built in 1738-39 by Osman Ağa, the Bey of Çarsancak; it is said that the plane tree was planted around the same period.
You wouldn't come here specifically. Your path will naturally lead you here while visiting Harput Castle and the historical mosques in the vicinity. Sitting in the mosque courtyard for a few minutes and resting in the shade of the tree provides a good break from the day's tiring walk.
