Arap Baba Mosque and Tomb is a 13th-century Seljuk structure built on rocks in Elazığ's Harput neighborhood; it features a mosque on the upper floor and a tomb containing a headless corpse on the lower floor.
When you descend a meter or two from Alaca Mosque and enter through the small door among the rocks, you find yourself in the Arap Baba Tomb. The structure was built in 1279 during the reign of Gıyaseddin Keyhüsrev III; its inscription mentions Yusuf, son of Arap Şah, as its patron. The typical feature of Seljuk tomb architecture is also present here: the mosque is on top, the burial chamber is below. The minaret of the domed mosque has partially collapsed over time.
In the center of the rectangular-planned tomb, the body of Arap Baba lies in a wooden sarcophagus covered with green cloth. The body is headless. According to a drought legend told in the region, an old woman, guided by a dream, separated the head from the body and threw it into the stream, after which both rain and flood came. It is said that the hands and feet remained intact down to the nails; the possibility of mummification has been investigated but no definitive conclusion has been reached. Visitor comments indicate that the remains were previously partially displayed, but are now completely covered; some visitors also write that the tomb has recently been closed at certain hours.
Another point highlighted in the comments is the spiritual atmosphere of the place. Visitors state that they come to pray and that the surroundings are clean and well-maintained. For those visiting Harput, it is a stop that can be easily added to the tour itinerary, as it is very close to Alaca Mosque.

Guide's Note
Who is Arap Baba?
The person in the tomb is named Yusuf, and his father's name is Arapşah. He is believed to have lived in the 13th century; it is rumored that he was one of the Seljuk commanders who participated in the conquest of Harput, and also a saint who gave religious teachings. His date and place of birth are unknown, and his date of death is not clear. It is said that he often used to say, "I came with a sword, I will leave with a pen."
When to Visit?
Harput is livelier in the summer months, with more crowds, but since the tomb is a small structure, it can be comfortably visited even in hot weather. In winter, due to Harput's high altitude, cold and wind are factors to consider. Morning hours are calmer for visiting along with Alaca Mosque and the castle.
How to Get There?
From Elazığ city center, it takes 15-20 minutes to reach Harput by private car. For those using public transport, the Harput stop is the closest point, about a 10-minute walk to the tomb. After entering Harput, it is enough to find Alaca Mosque; the tomb's door is right next to it in the rocks, a few meters below.
How to Add to a Harput Trip?
Arap Baba Tomb is not a standalone destination but should be considered part of a Harput tour. A half-day itinerary can be planned with Harput Castle, Ulu Mosque, and Sara Hatun Mosque. Since the tomb visit is short, it can easily be squeezed between other stops.
Things to Know Before Visiting
Visitor comments indicate that some people state the tomb has recently been closed to visitors, and the remains are now kept completely covered. Previously, a part of the body in the glass case was displayed openly, but now it is covered with a cloth. It might be useful to inquire from local sources whether it is open before visiting.
Good Spots for Photos
The tomb's location on the rocks offers an interesting frame for photos taken from the slope overlooking the Harput Plain. The small door and rectangular interior are suitable for narrow-angle but atmospheric shots. The rocky path outside the tomb can also be considered for landscape photography.
How Much Time to Allocate?
The tomb itself is a small structure and can be visited within 15-20 minutes. For those who want to visit all of Harput, including the castle, mosques, and museum, a half-day is required.
