Surp Giragos Armenian Church

The foundations of Surp Giragos date back to 1515-1518. The structure was completely destroyed in a major fire in 1880; the community rebuilt the church in the same location in 1883. From the mid-century onwards, the church fell into disrepair and became a ruin, remaining silent for many years. With comprehensive restoration work initiated in 2011, the structure was brought back to life and opened to visitors. According to church officials, the final restoration work was completed in 2022.

Surp Giragos has a structure that distinctly deviates from conventional church plans. The five-section interior, designed in dedication to Jesus Christ and the four Evangelists (Matthew, Mark, Luke, John), is one of the features that most attracts visitors' attention. The church gives the impression of a complex rather than just a place of worship; it forms a holistic area with its spacious courtyard and surrounding structures. Inside, texts read from holy books add a distinct meaning to the atmosphere of the space.

Diyarbakır's summer months are quite hot; feeling this heat in the narrow streets of Sur can be tiring. April-June and September-November are much more comfortable for both sightseeing and photography. Services are held in the church from time to time; it would be advisable to get information in advance for those who wish to visit on these special days.

The church is located in Diyarbakır's Sur district, in Özdemir Neighborhood, near Sheikh Matar Mosque. Minibus lines operate from the city center to Sur; you can also easily reach it by taxi. It is possible to explore Sur on foot; other historical structures of Diyarbakır are also within walking distance.

You can combine Surp Giragos with other historical structures within Sur. Diyarbakır city walls, Ulu Mosque, and Hasan Pasha Inn are within walking distance. After a short break in the church courtyard, you can continue exploring the historic streets of Sur. It's a good starting point for a half-day Sur tour.

As the church is an active place of worship, a respectful attitude is expected during visits. Visitors particularly advise getting a receipt after paying the entrance fee. There is an attendant inside; you can ask for help with your questions. It is safest to confirm opening hours on-site before going.

The church's exterior facade and the gate opening to the courtyard offer powerful shots. Inside, it is possible to capture the five-section structure and the ceiling with a wide angle. The area in the courtyard is also very suitable for photos reflecting both the architecture and the atmosphere.
