Diyarbakır Grand Mosque

The origins of Diyarbakır Grand Mosque date back to 639, when Islamic armies conquered the city. During the reign of Caliph Omar, the Church of Mar Toma, the city's largest church, was converted into a mosque, thus creating one of Anatolia's first mosques. Although the exact construction date of the structure is still debated among historians, this deep-rooted history makes it one of the most important examples of religious heritage in Turkey.

Architecturally, the most striking element of the structure is the stone columns in its interior. Over two hundred columns, each carved from a single piece of stone, together with the stone arches above them, create a unique structure. The courtyard and main gate of the Grand Mosque are the most preferred spots for photography. The dark tones created by the black basalt stone offer striking shots, especially when the sun is out before noon. Inside, the monolithic stone columns and the arches above them also create an interesting perspective.
