Zerzevan Castle, located in the Çınar district of Diyarbakır on the Diyarbakır-Mardin highway, is an eastern border garrison from the Roman period and contains Turkey's only underground Mithras temple.
The history of Zerzevan Castle dates back to the Assyrian period (882-611 BC). After Persian rule, the castle regained its function as a strategic garrison to protect the eastern border during the Roman Empire, and today it is one of Turkey's most important Roman-era archaeological sites. The Mithraeum, an underground Mithras temple, uncovered during excavations, is the most popular attraction for visitors with its approximately 1900-year history. The cult of Mithras was a belief system maintained through secret rituals in the Roman army; this temple was used by the garrison soldiers of the period.
Since the area is still undergoing active excavation, some visitors report that certain sections are closed. Most of the artifacts unearthed from the excavation are exhibited in the Diyarbakır Museum. The ascent to the castle involves steep stairs; restoration work is also ongoing. According to officials, the completion of the excavations could take decades. Therefore, coming here is like witnessing an archaeological site transform into a living document.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
The climate of Southeastern Anatolia is a factor that cannot be ignored when planning a visit to Zerzevan Castle. In July-August, temperatures can exceed 40 degrees Celsius, and there is almost no shade on the castle hill. April, May, September, and October are much more favorable for both walking and photography. In winter, the region can be cold and windy; keep in mind that most of the area is outdoors.
Arriving as soon as the gates open at 08:00 means a cooler visit and a quieter area. Since it is an active excavation site, you might also have the chance to see the excavation team at work on weekdays; this adds another dimension to the visit.
How to Get There?
Zerzevan Castle is located approximately 45 km south of Diyarbakır city center, on the Diyarbakır-Mardin highway (D955). Rental car or taxi is the most comfortable way to get there. It is possible to reach Çınar district by minibuses going from Diyarbakır to Mardin; however, you may need to walk or take an additional vehicle from there to the exact location of the castle.
If you are visiting Diyarbakır, planning Zerzevan as a stop on the Mardin route is logical in terms of both time and fuel. You can find up-to-date information on the official website of the site at www.zerzevan.org.
Suggested Itinerary
Including Zerzevan Castle in a day trip between Diyarbakır and Mardin is quite logical. You can leave Diyarbakır early, complete your visit to the castle, and then proceed to Mardin. If you want to see the artifacts unearthed from the excavation, also add the Diyarbakır Museum to your program; according to visitors, most of the findings from the site are exhibited there.
The primary stop inside the castle is the Mithraeum, the underground temple. Afterwards, you can follow the city walls to the top of the castle; from here, the wide view opening to the Mesopotamian plain offers a great spot for photos.
Photo Spots
The most striking photo spot at Zerzevan Castle is the entrance and interior of the Mithraeum. The stonework and dim atmosphere of the underground temple offer interesting shots; a good flashlight or flash comes in handy. From the upper point of the castle walls, wide-angle shots can be taken looking out over the surrounding plain and the distant mountain silhouettes.
The excavation areas themselves are also an interesting subject for documentary photography. The site offers rich material for those who want to record the active excavation process and the emerging structural layers. In terms of light, between 08:00-10:00 and late afternoon create a softer atmosphere.
Things to Consider
A significant portion of the area is closed to visitors due to active excavation. As we learned from visitor comments, in some sections, only signs and unexcavated soil can be seen. Zerzevan is an area where you enter a living archaeological process rather than a completed open-air museum; shape your expectations accordingly.
The ascent to the castle involves steep stairs. This route is quite challenging for visitors with mobility limitations; the area is not suitable for wheelchairs and strollers. Bring plenty of water and do not forget to apply sunscreen.
What to Eat Nearby?
Dining options immediately around Zerzevan Castle are extremely limited. We recommend eating something in Diyarbakır city center or Çınar district before your visit. Diyarbakır is a gastronomic city known for its local delicacies such as liver kebab, ribs, meftune, and kadayıf dolması; it makes sense to take advantage of this opportunity on your way back. Don't forget to bring snacks and enough water.
About Zerzevan Castle
The history of Zerzevan Castle dates back to the Assyrian period, between 882-611 BC. After Persian rule, the Roman Empire restructured the region as a strategic garrison to protect its eastern border. The Mithraeum, unearthed during excavations, is the only underground Mithras temple found in Turkey to date. Excavation work is carried out by academics from Dicle University. According to officials, the work in the area is still well under one percent complete; this indicates that Zerzevan will be an area much more talked about in the archaeological world in the coming decades.
