Guide's Note
History and Importance
Fatih Pasha Mosque is the first large structure built by the Ottomans immediately after their conquest of Diyarbakır. Bıyıklı Mehmet Pasha, after being appointed as the city's first Ottoman governor in 1515, had this mosque built between 1516-1520. The structure holds a special place in architectural history as one of the pioneering examples of the central-domed plan type in Anatolia.
Known as Kurşunlu Mosque among the public due to its lead-covered domes, the structure literally took bullets in recent history; it suffered serious damage during conflicts. Bullet marks can still be seen above the mihrab in the restored mosque. Next to the mosque, there is also a tomb and a cemetery with stone monuments.
Architectural Features
One of the most striking elements of the mosque is its square-plan minaret; this type of minaret is extremely rare in Anatolia and is thought to indicate that it was converted from a church. Inside, the Ottoman tiles covering the walls, the mihrab and minbar blended with Seljuk-style details are among the prominent features of the structure. Visitors particularly emphasize the marble workmanship in the mihrab. Its spacious and tranquil courtyard also adds a distinct serenity to the mosque.
When to Visit?
The ideal time to visit Diyarbakır is during April-May and September-October. During these periods, the weather is quite suitable for walking through the stone streets of Sur. Since temperatures can exceed 40 degrees in summer, early morning hours should be preferred. As the mosque is open to visitors during prayer times, choosing noon or afternoon prayer times increases your chance of entering.
How to Get There?
Fatih Pasha Mosque is located in Fatihpaşa Neighborhood, in the historical Sur district of Diyarbakır. From the city center, Sur can be easily reached by minibus or taxi. The mosque is situated opposite Hz. Süleyman Mosque (Küpelikapı); visiting these two structures together forms a logical route. Since it is difficult to drive through the narrow and stony streets of Sur, it is recommended to park your car at a suitable spot and walk.
Suggested Route
Fatih Pasha Mosque can be easily visited along with other historical structures in Sur in a single day. Grand Mosque, Four-Legged Minaret, Behram Pasha Mosque, and Hasan Pasha Inn are within walking distance. Starting with the Grand Mosque in the morning, visiting Fatih Pasha Mosque at noon, and then completing the day with a walk along the Diyarbakır city walls creates both an efficient and enjoyable program.
What to Eat Nearby?
In the Sur district and its vicinity, there are many local establishments offering Diyarbakır cuisine's iconic liver wrap, stuffed ribs, and the famous Diyarbakır kebab. Small artisan restaurants in the historical bazaar area offer both affordable and authentic options. You should also definitely taste Diyarbakır's world-famous watermelon in season.
Things to Know Before Visiting
The mosque is actively used for worship; please be quiet and respectful during your visit. You must remove your shoes when entering, and female visitors should cover their heads. Since it is stated to be open during prayer times, it is recommended to plan your visit accordingly. As some streets in the Sur district are narrow and uneven, choose comfortable walking shoes.
Photo Spots
The most striking view of the mosque from the outside is obtained from the courtyard gate; the square-plan minaret and lead domes can be framed together. Inside, the mihrab and its marble workmanship, and the bullet holes bearing the traces of history, make for interesting photo subjects. The tomb and stone monuments in the courtyard also offer valuable details for photography. Visiting before noon provides a lighting advantage for interior photos.
