Beyağaç Kartal Lake Nature Reserve is a mountain lake surrounded by black pine forests, located at an altitude of 1903 meters on Çiçekbaba Mountain in Beyağaç district of Denizli, providing habitat for 150 bird species in its 1500-hectare area.
Kartal Lake is located on the northern slopes of Çiçekbaba Mountain, 1903 meters above sea level, in the Beyağaç district of Denizli. This region, designated as a Nature Reserve and Natural Site by the General Directorate of National Parks and Wildlife Protection of the Ministry of Forestry, covers an area of approximately 1500 hectares. In the black pine forest surrounding the lake, there are trees estimated to be close to 1400 years old; these individuals make the area botanically very valuable.
The region has become a focal point for naturalists and birdwatchers with a total of 150 bird species, 35 of which are permanent residents. Storks, wild ducks, and crested white herons are among the most prominent species. To reach the lake, you can hike a trail of approximately 16 kilometers; it is stated that this route can be partially covered by high-clearance vehicles, but it should not be attempted with every vehicle. Even in May, snow patches can be encountered at the summit, and cool weather prevails around the lake.
Camping is possible at the lake; however, it is crucial not to leave any trash to protect the area. You should go prepared, considering that trail signs may be missing and the road may contain rough sections.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
The most suitable period for Kartal Lake is the summer season, extending from early June to late September. Even in May, snow patches can be found on the road to the lake and around the summit of Çiçekbaba Mountain; visitors report feeling quite cold during this period. July and August are the most favorable months for both weather conditions and camping experience.
In early October, the black pine forest changes color and the region takes on a different appearance; however, due to the high altitude, nights can be cold. In winter, road conditions become difficult and access to the region becomes challenging.
How to Get There?
From Denizli city center, follow the Denizli–Muğla highway to Kale District. From the eastern part of Kale, follow the stabilized road for approximately 33 kilometers to reach Kartal Lake Nature Reserve.
Since a significant portion of the road is rough and unmaintained, it is necessary to use a high-clearance vehicle. Attempting to go with a standard passenger car can both damage the vehicle and make it difficult to complete the route. As signs may be missing along the route, it is highly recommended to save the coordinates to your offline map in advance. Public transport options are extremely limited.
Hiking Route
The trail surrounding the lake, starting from the point where you can no longer drive, is approximately 16 kilometers long. It is recommended to have regular hiking experience to comfortably complete this distance. You may feel the effects of thin air due to the high altitude along the route; carry plenty of water and snacks.
Sections passing through the black pine forest, the lakeside, and points near the summit of Çiçekbaba Mountain offer the most beautiful photo opportunities. For those coming by motorcycle, visitors particularly emphasize the use of protective gear.
How Many Days to Allocate?
For those who only want to see the lake and take a short walk, one full day is sufficient; however, considering the round-trip travel time from Denizli and the 16 km trail, it is essential to start early.
For those who want to experience the true atmosphere of the region, an overnight camping trip is a much more satisfying option. Campers who stayed overnight in July report being extremely satisfied with this choice due to stargazing and morning bird sounds.
Photo Spots
The best photographic angle of Kartal Lake is obtained from the northern slopes overlooking the lake; here, both the lake's surface and the mountain silhouette in the background fit into the same frame. The light filtering through the centuries-old black pines creates dramatic shadows, especially in the early morning and late afternoon.
For bird photography, the lakeside and marsh edges are the most productive spots; crested white herons and wild ducks are frequently seen in these areas. In May, the snow-covered areas near the summit offer an interesting opportunity for those who want to capture all four seasons in a single frame.
Things to Consider
In this Nature Reserve, it is the primary responsibility of visitors not to harm nature. Leaving trash or bottles in the area is unacceptable; take everything you bring with you back.
Due to the high altitude, weather conditions can change rapidly; even in mid-summer, a thick raincoat or jacket should be in your bag. Signs are reported to be missing along the road; do not set off without an offline map application. If you do not have a high-clearance vehicle, be prepared for the 16 km hike and bring enough water.
Natural and Scientific Importance
Kartal Lake Nature Reserve harbors one of Turkey's richest high-mountain ecosystems in terms of biodiversity. 150 different bird species, 35 of which are permanent residents, make the region an important site for ornithological research. Storks, wild ducks, and crested white herons are among the most frequently observed species.
In the black pine forest within the area, there are individuals estimated to be close to 1400 years old. These trees are considered among the oldest black pine specimens in Turkey and also make the region botanically valuable. The approximately 1500-hectare area is managed by the General Directorate of National Parks and Wildlife Protection of the Ministry of Forestry and is protected under Natural Site status.
