Tuz Han (Umur Bey Han)

Tuz Han is located in Bursa's Khans Region, a complex of commercial structures dating back to the Ottoman period. Officially named Tuz Pazarı Han, the building is also known as Umur Bey Han among the public. It was built in 1454 by Umur Bey, son of Timurtaş Pasha. The inscription documenting the history of the building can still be seen today on the facade of the Omur Bey Mosque.

The han takes its name from the salt and spice trade conducted here. During the Ottoman period, such hans were not only lodging places but also vibrant centers where trade flourished. Tuz Han served as a hub for merchants to store their goods and stay overnight for many years.

The best time to visit Bursa is between April-June and September-November. During these months, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold; the crowd levels in the Khans Region also remain more reasonable compared to mid-summer. Since Tuz Han is an open-courtyard structure, it can get quite hot during midday in the summer months; choosing early morning or late afternoon hours will make for a much more pleasant visit.

If you come on a weekday, especially in the morning, you will have the chance to explore the han in a calmer atmosphere before the surrounding bazaar noise intensifies.

Tuz Han is located on Tuzpazarı Street in Bursa's Osmangazi district. It is approximately a 5-minute walk from Ulu Cami. Since it is in the same area as other historic hans like Koza Han and Pirinç Han, it is quite easy to include it in a collective walking route.

If you are coming by Bursa metro, the Şehreküstü stop is the closest point. From there, you can walk to the Khans Region. For those coming by car, finding parking in the area can be difficult; it would be more practical to choose one of the nearby parking lots.

Tuz Han gains much more meaning when visited not alone but as part of the entire Khans Region. You can try this route: Ulu Cami → Koza Han → Pirinç Han → Tuz Han → Sipahiler Bazaar. This route can be comfortably completed in about 2-3 hours.

After visiting Tuz Han, you can take a short shopping break in the surrounding bazaars or sit in one of the nearby historic coffee houses. The region carries the traces of Ottoman trade life, so encountering a striking detail at every corner is inevitable.

The most impressive photo angles of Tuz Han are captured from the center of the courtyard. The parallel extension of the two-story arcades and the stone craftsmanship offer an ideal composition for wide-angle shots. The shadows falling into the courtyard in the morning light add a distinct depth to the structure.

The view of the courtyard from the upper floor arcades also provides a strong perspective. The inscription and stone decorations are also interesting elements for detail photography. For those who want to do street photography with the surrounding bazaar texture, many frames await you along Tuzpazarı Street.

The Khans Region, where Tuz Han is located, is also a rich gastronomic spot in Bursa. In the region, long-established restaurants serving İskender kebab continue to preserve traditional Bursa cuisine. These restaurants are quite crowded, especially at lunchtime; it's advisable to come early.

Candied chestnuts and Bursa-specific desserts sold in small shops between the hans can also be preferred as snacks. For tea, traditional tea houses in the region or small cafes in the courtyards of historic hans are good options.

Tuz Han is an open historical structure, and visits are generally free. However, since the usage status of the interior can change over time, it may be useful to check on-site. Since the floor is stone-paved, it is recommended to come with comfortable, non-slip shoes.

The structure is located within an active commercial area, so the surroundings are quite lively. It is advisable to pay attention to your valuables and carry your bag in front of you during crowded hours. It is also important to respect the privacy of local shopkeepers and residents when taking photos.
