Hamzabey Mosque

Hamzabey Mosque is located on Hamzabey Street in the Muradiye neighborhood of Bursa's Osmangazi district. Dating back to the 1440s, this mosque is mentioned in historical sources as the largest of the masjids built in Bursa during the reign of Fatih Sultan Mehmed. The structure, which forms the center of the Hamzabey Complex, is considered as a whole with its mosque, tomb, and surrounding structures.

The mosque, bearing the characteristics of early Ottoman architecture, draws attention with its simple facade arrangement and sincere atmosphere. The structure, which remained neglected for many years, was reopened for worship and visits thanks to restoration works completed in 2012.

While most of the year is suitable for visiting Hamzabey Mosque, the spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) months are the most comfortable periods, both in terms of weather conditions and for exploring Bursa's historical peninsula. Bursa can be quite hot in the summer; visiting in the early morning or late afternoon will be much more enjoyable.

The mosque is crowded during Friday prayer times. If you plan to come at these hours, paying attention to prayer times will facilitate respectful coexistence with worshippers. The hours after morning prayer are ideal for a quiet and peaceful visit.

You can reach Hamzabey Mosque from Bursa city center by taking buses going to the Muradiye district. The mosque, located on Karlıca Street, can also be reached on foot from the Muradiye Complex; the distance between the two structures is quite short.

For those coming by private car, there is limited parking available in the vicinity. If you are exploring Bursa's historical center, you can visit the Muradiye Complex, Hamzabey Mosque, and other Ottoman structures in the surrounding area on foot on the same day.

It is quite easy to include Hamzabey Mosque in Bursa's Ottoman heritage route. You can reach Hamzabey Mosque with a walk starting from the Muradiye Complex, and then continue towards the Bursa Grand Mosque and the Khans Region. This route allows you to see the city's most important early Ottoman structures in a single day.

The Green Mosque and Green Tomb are also within visiting distance on the same day. For those who want to explore the historical peninsula on foot, this route is both efficient and enjoyable.

Muradiye and its surroundings are full of small restaurants and cafes offering traditional Bursa flavors. İskender kebap is a unique Bursa delicacy that must be tried. There are many well-established İskender restaurants near the historical bazaar area.

Bursa's famous candied chestnuts and İnegöl meatballs can also be easily found in the city. Small patisseries and tea gardens in the Muradiye district are good options for taking a break between visits.

Hamzabey Mosque, with its facade reflecting the simple beauty of early Ottoman architecture, is an interesting structure for photography. In the morning light, the mosque courtyard and minaret are framed with soft shadows and warm tones. The tomb section of the complex may also attract photographers with its architectural details.

Hamzabey Mosque is an active place of worship. It is important to be quiet and respectful during your visit and to avoid entering during prayer times. You should remove your shoes when entering the mosque, and female visitors are required to cover their heads.

The structure was in disrepair for many years before being restored in 2012; therefore, you may encounter old photos in some sources. Today, the mosque is well-maintained and open to visitors. There is no entrance fee.
