Selge Ancient City

Selge is one of the important cities of its time, founded in the mountainous geography of the ancient Pisidian region. Thanks to its location nestled on the steep slopes of the Taurus Mountains, it was not easily conquered throughout history; this unique defense strategy ensured the city's long survival. Today, Selge, located within the borders of Köprülü Canyon National Park, offers a double richness with both its archaeological and natural values.

Research conducted in the city reveals that Selge was a vibrant trade and cultural center during the Hellenistic and Roman periods. The variety of structures, from the theater to the aqueduct, from garrison buildings to the chapel, shows how developed the city's urban planning was. Altınkaya Neighborhood, also known as Zerk, is still a small village today, living among the ancient ruins.

Since Selge is 950 meters above sea level, it has a cooler climate compared to coastal Antalya. Even in mid-summer, it can be a good option for those looking to escape the oppressive heat of the coastal strip; however, in July-August, the sun can be quite harsh at midday, and shaded areas are limited.

April, May, and June are the most ideal times to visit: the weather is mild, the surroundings are green, and the roads are not yet crowded. September and October are similarly comfortable. Roads can sometimes close in winter; it is important to check local conditions before planning a visit between November and March.

Selge is approximately 125 kilometers from Antalya city center. The route continues via Manavgat to Köprülü Canyon National Park, and from there to Altınkaya (Zerk) Neighborhood. The final section of the road is quite narrow, winding, and mountainous. High-clearance vehicles or 4x4s are recommended; if going with small passenger cars, careful driving is essential.

Public transport connections are practically non-existent. While it is possible to approach the area from Manavgat by minibus or dolmuş, a private vehicle is required for the final part. Day trips from Antalya or Side offer a more practical option, including transportation and guidance. Rafting tour operators in Köprülü Canyon often include Selge in their itinerary.

Upon arrival, the first structure that greets you is usually the Selge Theater. Its state of preservation is quite good; you can climb the seating steps to see both the stage and the surrounding Taurus mountain scenery. After the theater, you can follow the ancient road traces to proceed into the inner parts of the city.

The remains of the aqueduct, garrison buildings, and chapel bear traces from different periods of the city. The Kemer Bridge and Boğrüm Bridge in Köprülü Canyon are an integral part of a Selge visit; these Roman-era bridges create an incredible view over the canyon. The most powerful photo shots of Selge are obtained from the theater. In images taken from the upper steps of the theater, the ancient structure and the Taurus Mountains form the background; the light falls very well on this spot in the early morning. In the afternoon, it is possible to catch the golden hour light on the west-facing slopes.

The Kemer and Boğrüm bridges are also extremely strong points for photography. When the green water of Köprüçay flowing under the bridges and the Roman-era stonework are framed together, impressive shots emerge. A wide-angle lens or panorama mode for a phone camera works well at these spots.

Selge is an ancient city that is neglected and left to its own devices. There is no official staff, ticket office, toilet, or cafe infrastructure in the area. Water, snacks, and sun protection should be with you. The terrain is uneven and rocky; comfortable walking shoes or boots should be preferred.

Before setting off, check your vehicle's fuel status; finding a gas station in the region is difficult. Cell phone signal is weak or non-existent, so it is recommended to download maps offline in advance. Since there is no emergency response point in the area, visitors with limited health conditions should be careful.

A few small village restaurants or guesthouses may be found in Altınkaya (Zerk) Neighborhood; however, their continuity and capacity vary. Homemade meals, fresh vegetables, and local products offered by the local people in the village can be a surprising experience.

As a safer option, you can choose restaurants near the entrance of Köprülü Canyon; these facilities, which serve rafting tours, usually offer lunch. If you plan a long day, taking enough food and drink with you will be both practical and economical.

Accommodation options near Selge are almost non-existent. Guesthouse services may occasionally be provided in the village; it is necessary to obtain information from local sources in advance regarding this. Most visitors plan Selge as a day trip.

The closest accommodation centers to the region are Manavgat and Side. Both offer hotel and guesthouse options in various price ranges. Antalya city center can also be used as a base; however, considering the distance, staying in Manavgat or Side is more practical for an early morning departure.

Since Selge itself is free, the main cost of the visit is transportation and fuel. If you are renting a car from Antalya or Side, factor in fuel and possible bridge tolls. A national park entrance fee per vehicle may be charged at the entrance of Köprülü Canyon National Park; as this fee changes over time, it is best to inquire about the current amount on site.

If you go through a tour operator, prices usually include transportation, guidance, and sometimes lunch. Package tours combined with rafting activities are also available. Taking something ready to eat and drink with you is both practical and economical.
