Antiphellos Ancient City

Kaş, and therefore Antiphellos, is suitable for visits for most of the year due to its Mediterranean climate. In July–August, temperatures can reach 35–40 degrees Celsius, making outdoor excursions quite tiring. April, May, September, and October are the most balanced periods in terms of both weather and crowds; the town is quieter, and nature is vibrant.

Visiting the ancient theater at sunset offers a completely different feeling. Watching the hours when the Aegean Sea flows into Kaş bay from the west-facing seating steps intuitively explains why the city was built in this exact location. Although there are occasional rainy days in winter, Kaş continues to welcome visitors with its mild winters.

The most practical way to reach Antiphellos is to get to Kaş. There are regular bus services from Antalya bus terminal to Kaş; the journey takes approximately 3 hours. For those coming from Fethiye, there is a bus connection of similar duration.

After arriving at Kaş bus station, it is possible to reach the ancient theater on foot; the distance is about 1 km. Short walks through the streets of Kaş are sufficient to explore other scattered ruins (sarcophagi, rock tombs) in the town. For those arriving by private car, there are paid parking areas in the town center. Scooter and bicycle rental options are also available in summer.

Since there is no obligation to enter or exit Antiphellos through a specific gate, you can shape your route according to your preferences. A suggested walking route could be as follows: Start from the sarcophagi in Kaş center, then ascend to the rock tombs and necropolis area in the upper parts of the town. From there, descend to the ancient theater, which gives the feeling of Lycia's gateway to the sea, and if possible, stay until sunset.

After the theater, you can continue your stroll through the narrow stone streets of Kaş, discovering sarcophagi leaning against walls or standing in gardens with surprise. For those who wish to see the Akdam Dor Tomb, located approximately 5 km away, a short car trip needs to be planned.

Kaş is one of Turkey's most enjoyable dining towns on the Mediterranean coast. There are many restaurants serving seafood near the ancient theater and around the harbor. Fresh sea bream, sea bass, and octopus are among the main choices.

In the narrow streets of the town, you'll find more affordable pide and kebab shops, breakfast spots, and small cafes offering local delicacies. Terraced restaurants overlooking the harbor are satisfying for both food and views. For those shopping in Kaş, local olive oil and thyme, unique to the Lycian region, can also be nice souvenirs.

Antiphellos and Kaş offer a very fertile area for photography enthusiasts. The ancient theater is the strongest photo spot, especially at sunset, with its shots featuring the sea in the background; wide-angle photos taken from the upper rows of the steps capture both the theater and the bay together.

The rock tombs in the upper neighborhoods of the town, with their architecture carved into the rocks, provide a backdrop for unusual compositions. The sarcophagi scattered throughout the streets of Kaş are ideal for unique shots where daily life and history intertwine; it's not surprising to see a flower stall or children playing next to a sarcophagus. In the early morning hours, the light is soft, and the crowds are still sparse.

Since the ruins of Antiphellos are scattered throughout the town of Kaş, it is useful to obtain a map or guide beforehand to plan your visit. Access to some of the ruins may be restricted as they are located within private properties or between streets.

The paths leading to the rock tombs can be uneven; it is advisable to wear comfortable walking shoes. In summer, sun protection and plenty of water should be carried. Not damaging ancient structures and not climbing on sarcophagi or tomb structures is both a legal and ethical obligation. ATMs and pharmacies are easy to find in Kaş town.

A 1–2 hour walk is usually sufficient for Antiphellos itself. Kaş and its surroundings, however, offer many options that can fill daily excursions. A stay of at least 2 nights is a reasonable duration to comfortably explore both the ancient city and the surrounding natural beauties (such as Kekova, Blue Cave, Patara).

Those following the Lycian Way hiking route or wishing to join boat tours will have a much more fulfilling experience if they extend this period to 3–4 days. The town itself is also very pleasant for evening strolls and sitting by the harbor.

Kaş is a small but developed tourist town offering accommodation options for various budgets. Boutique hotels, guesthouses, and apart-hotels can be found in the town center and around the harbor. Rooms with sea views are naturally more expensive.

During the summer season (June–August), it is important to make reservations in advance; popular boutique hotels fill up quickly. For more affordable options, guesthouses in the inner streets of the town are a good alternative. Rental villas and holiday home options are also available in the surrounding villages.

Since Antiphellos can be visited completely free of charge, there is no need to allocate a separate budget for the ancient city. Food and drink expenses in Kaş are moderate compared to Turkey's major holiday resorts; harbor restaurants are more expensive, while small eateries in the town offer more economical options.

Accommodation varies significantly depending on the season and type of lodging. Bus transport is quite cost-effective. Day trips to surrounding ancient cities (Kekova, Patara, etc.) by boat or car can constitute a significant portion of the budget.
