Security Monument (Güvenpark Monument)

The Security Monument is located in the center of Güvenpark in Kızılay, one of Ankara's busiest areas. Built in 1935 at the initiative of the then Minister of Interior, Şükrü Kaya, the structure was erected to symbolize the Turkish nation's trust in the police and gendarmerie. It is also known as the Police Monument or Güvenpark Monument. Andesite stone, specific to Ankara, was preferred for its construction; this not only created a local material identity but also reflected the simple and strong architectural language of the period. Being one of the surviving examples of civil monument architecture from the first decades of the Republic, the structure holds a much more significant place than merely a decorative element.

Since Güvenpark is an open-air area, it can be visited in any season of the year. Spring and autumn months offer the best opportunity to see the monument beautifully with the park's greenery. In summer, Kızılay is quite crowded, so visiting in the early morning or late afternoon provides both a calmer atmosphere and better light for photography. Visiting in winter is also possible; in snowy weather, the surrounding park takes on an interesting appearance.

Reaching the Security Monument from any point in Ankara is quite easy. You can take the metro on lines M1 or M2, get off at Kızılay station, and walk a few minutes to Güvenpark. Many bus lines from various parts of the city also terminate in Kızılay. With its proximity to Yüksel Street, the monument is also very accessible for pedestrians. If you are coming by car, there are paid parking options nearby; however, considering Kızılay's heavy traffic, it is more sensible to prefer public transport.

The Security Monument, along with its surroundings, offers beautiful photo opportunities. Wide-angle photos of the monument from the front allow you to capture Güvenpark's trees and the city skyline in the background. The warm tones of the andesite stone become particularly prominent during the golden hour, known as sunrise and sunset. Focusing closely on the stone carvings and inscriptions yields interesting detailed shots. In winter, the bare trees around it frame the monument with a more dramatic background.

Immediately around Güvenpark, within Kızılay's dense commercial fabric, there are numerous dining options to suit every budget. Cafes on Yüksel Street and Sakarya Street are popular spots for employees during lunch breaks. A wide range is available, from traditional Turkish cuisine to fast food, bakeries to coffee shops. Kızılay also hosts some of Ankara's oldest restaurants; especially the fish restaurants and meyhane tradition on Sakarya Street hold a special place in the city.

You can create a walking route exploring Ankara's modern historical fabric, centering on the Security Monument. Starting from Güvenpark, you can walk along Atatürk Boulevard towards Ulus and fit the Republic Museum and Ankara Castle into the same day. Alternatively, you can walk from Kızılay towards Çankaya to explore the area around the Presidential Complex. The monument serves as a natural starting point for a half-day Ankara walk.

Güvenpark is one of Ankara's busiest and most vibrant spots; especially on weekdays during lunch hours, the park can be crowded. Since the monument is in an open area, it is advisable to plan your visit accordingly for rainy or very hot weather. Due to the heavy traffic and crowds in the vicinity, caution is required if you are coming with small children. The monument itself is free and can be visited at any time; no ticket or reservation is required.
