Sarıyar Dam

The most enjoyable time to visit Sarıyar Dam is during spring and autumn. From March to May, the weather is mild, and migratory activity at Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary reaches its peak; it is possible to observe hundreds of different species at once. In autumn, the changing colors of the surrounding forests attract photography enthusiasts to the region.

Summer months are ideal for water sports and fishing; the lake surface is very suitable for boat trips on calm days. Winter visits offer a calmer atmosphere, but some shore facilities may be closed out of season. Since it can be crowded on weekends, those who prefer to visit on weekdays will have a much more peaceful day.

The most comfortable way to reach Sarıyar Dam is by private car. It is reached by following the highway indicating the direction of Nallıhan from Ankara city center, a journey of approximately 165 km. The scenery gradually becomes greener along the way; especially as you approach Nallıhan, the winding mountain passes make the drive enjoyable.

For those who prefer public transport, there are regular services to Nallıhan from various bus terminals in Ankara. After getting off at Nallıhan district center, you can reach the dam area by local minibuses or taxi. Some travel agencies also organize day trips to the region; this is a very useful alternative for those without a car.

The most striking photo spot in the dam area is the Adnan Menderes Glass Terrace. This terrace, built on the dam body, allows you to see the entire Çayırhan Lake from a bird's-eye view. At sunset, the reflection of light on the water surface creates truly powerful shots.

In Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary, flocks of birds rising in the mist in the early morning offer a rare opportunity for nature photographers. A wide-angle lens and a little patience will be your greatest helpers here. The rocky outcrops along the dam's shoreline also provide useful points for strong compositions framing the lake view.

The facilities on the dam shore and restaurants in Nallıhan district center are the main dining stops in the region. Freshwater fish caught in the Sakarya basin, especially carp and trout, are among the prominent flavors of the region. Ordering fresh grilled fish at the shore facilities transforms a lunch spent with the dam view into a completely different experience.

It is also possible to find fresh vegetables, fruits, and homemade products from local producers in Nallıhan's village markets. It is a good idea for those planning a long nature walk or bird watching to bring snacks and water; facilities in the region can be limited.

Starting early from Ankara and beginning the day with bird watching at Nallıhan Bird Sanctuary in the morning provides a good start. Afterwards, you can go to the dam shore to enjoy the lake view and experience a boat tour or fishing at the shore facilities.

After having lunch with fresh fish at a facility on the shore, going up to the Adnan Menderes Glass Terrace to take photos of the panoramic view would be a nice afternoon activity. On the way back, you can stop by Nallıhan district center to visit the Tapduk Emre Tomb and complete the route by shopping at the local market. This route can also be combined with Gürleyik Waterfall in Eskişehir for a two-day tour.

Some roads around the dam are narrow and winding; careful driving is required in winter months. Prefer Nallıhan district center for refueling, as finding a station in the dam area can be difficult.

During a visit to the bird sanctuary, being quiet and calm is important for both birds and other visitors. Not leaving trash in natural areas and not damaging vegetation is critical for the protection of the region. If you plan to do water sports, confirming the seasonal opening dates of the shore facilities in advance will prevent loss of time. Also, remember to have the necessary fishing license for fishing.
