Mehmetçik Monument (Dur Yolcu Mehmetçik Monument)

Rising on Kartaltepe, west of Polatlı, the Mehmetçik Monument symbolizes the sacrifice and humanity of the Turkish soldier who carried a wounded enemy soldier on his back during the Gallipoli Wars. Built with the support of Koç Holding and Tüpraş, the structure reaches a total of 40 meters with its 22-meter statue and 18-meter pedestal. Beneath the monument is the Victory Museum, focusing on the Turkish War of Independence and especially the Battle of Sakarya. Entrance to both is free.

The participation of the then Chief of General Staff, General Yaşar Büyükanıt, in the opening ceremony also highlights the official importance of the monument. This giant structure, visible from a distance when passing on the Ankara-Eskişehir highway, has become one of the most prominent symbols of the region.

While the monument is open to visitors all year round, April-May and September-October are the most comfortable periods. In mid-summer, the area around Ankara can be quite hot and dry; walking under the sun, especially at noon, can be tiring. In winter months, caution is required as the road leading to Kartaltepe may experience icing.

Early mornings are ideal for photography, being both cool and well-lit. On weekends, school groups and families can be numerous; if you prefer a quieter visit, you can choose weekdays.

There are several ways to reach Polatlı from Ankara. Bus: You can take Polatlı lines from Ankara bus terminal to the district. Train: TCDD's Ankara-Eskişehir line passes through Polatlı; train services run at regular intervals. After arriving in Polatlı, there is approximately 6 kilometers to the monument; taking a taxi or using a private car is the most practical way.

By private car: From Ankara, follow the E90 (Ankara-Eskişehir) highway and turn towards Kartaltepe from the Polatlı exit. The monument will start to appear on the horizon along the way, so finding the way is not difficult.

The Mehmetçik Monument, due to its size and location, is a very productive place for photographers. From the top of Kartaltepe, the Polatlı plain and the Ankara skyline in the distance allow for wide-angle shots. Perspective photos taken looking up from the base of the monument are among the best frames reflecting the grandeur of the structure.

At sunset, the monument takes on a dramatic appearance with the twilight light. In photos taken from a distance while passing on the highway, the monument's rise from the plain is clearly felt. A wide-angle lens or phone camera is sufficient for these shots.

There are no food and beverage facilities immediately around the monument. When you return to Polatlı town center, various restaurants and cafes await you. Since Polatlı is one of Ankara's important wheat production regions, local bread varieties and grain-based dishes stand out.

If you are on a day trip from Ankara, it is recommended to bring snacks and water with you; especially in hot months, it may be difficult to find drinks in Kartaltepe.

1-2 hours are sufficient for the monument and the Victory Museum. Polatlı and its surroundings also host other historically important points regarding the War of Independence; the areas where the Battle of Sakarya took place, the Duatepe Monument, and the surrounding battlefields can also be added to your itinerary. In this case, it would be appropriate to allocate a full day.

If you plan to leave Ankara early in the morning and return in the afternoon, you can create a route that combines the Mehmetçik Monument with other historical points around Polatlı.

The road leading to Kartaltepe may carry a risk of icing, especially in winter months; careful driving is required during this period. Shaded areas around the monument are quite limited; in summer months, it is recommended to carry a hat, sunscreen, and plenty of water.

Although the monument and museum are free, it would be a practical precaution to confirm opening hours and possible maintenance or restoration work with the Polatlı District Governorship or local tourism information units before your visit. If you are coming by public transport, keep in mind that there may not be a regular shuttle service from Polatlı to the monument other than a taxi.
