Güvercinkayası, located within the borders of Çatalsu Village in Aksaray province, on the shore of the Mamasın Dam built in 1960, is an important archaeological site harboring one of the oldest settlement traces in Anatolia. This city, built on a rock mass dating back to 5200-4750 BC, is considered a pioneer of the castle-city model in Anatolia; it is also believed to be the place where the first mining activities, first pyrotechnology applications, and first surgical interventions on the continent were carried out.
Carved churches, underground spaces, stone houses, and natural passages opening to valleys are found together in the area. It is possible to observe the layers left by nature and humans on the same surface over thousands of years. Thanks to recent excavation works and the opened experimental museum houses, visitors can experience this ancient way of life more concretely. In spring and summer, a wider section of the area becomes accessible for exploration as the dam waters recede.

Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
The most suitable period to visit Güvercinkayası is between May and September. During this time, the water level of Mamasın Dam relatively drops, and a wider section of the mound is revealed. Especially in spring, the rock mass combined with the surrounding greenery offers a very pleasant environment for both photography and hiking.
In winter, as the dam waters rise, some parts of the area may become inaccessible. Although temperatures are high in mid-summer, if early morning or late afternoon hours are preferred, the visit will be much more comfortable. Autumn, on the other hand, creates a distinct atmosphere with the fog over the dam and the changing colors.
How to Get There?
Güvercinkayası is located approximately 15–20 km from Aksaray city center, within the borders of Çatalsu Village and on the shore of Mamasın Dam. It is possible to reach it by private car from Aksaray center in about 20–25 minutes. Following the signs for the dam and surrounding villages along the way is sufficient.
Public transportation options are quite limited; dolmuş (shared taxi) or bus connections are not regular. Therefore, renting a car or joining daily cultural tours from Aksaray is the most practical method. Regular bus services are available from Ankara, Konya, and Nevşehir to Aksaray.

Photo Spots
Güvercinkayası offers extremely impressive photo opportunities with its rock mass rising above the calm waters of Mamasın Dam. In wide-angle photos taken from the dam's edge, the silhouette of the mound and water reflections can be captured together. Especially the fog layer that forms in the early morning creates a perfect environment for atmospheric and mystical shots.
The carved structures on the rock and the underground entrances also contain interesting details for close-up shots. At sunset, the orange light falling on the rocks transforms the entire area into a completely different appearance. A combination of wide-angle and macro lenses is recommended for photography; since the terrain is uneven, choosing sturdy shoes is important for both safety and freedom of movement.
