Oylat Cave

Oylat Cave is a fossil cave located in Hilmiye Neighborhood, İnegöl district of Bursa, at the end of Oylat Canyon, suspended on the canyon slope. Discovered in 2004, it has been open to visitors since 2006. With an formation process of approximately 3 million years, it stands out as one of Turkey's oldest and most remarkable caves.

The cave consists of two main interconnected sections. The first section includes narrow galleries extending from the entrance to the collapse hall; this part features walls up to 15 meters high and abundant dripstone pools and giant kettles. The second section is a large collapse hall reaching 20-25 meters in width. Large stalactite, stalagmite, and column formations extend throughout the hall. The height difference between the beginning and end of the hall reaches 93 meters. Creatures such as bats, millipedes, worms, butterflies, and guanobi also live inside the cave.

You can visit Oylat Cave at any time of the year; however, spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the periods when the surrounding nature looks most beautiful and the journey is most enjoyable. In these seasons, the greenery of Oylat Canyon and the cool air of the valley complement the cave visit.

In summer, the cave's internal temperature remains constant at approximately 19°C, acting as a natural air conditioner for visitors seeking refuge from the heat outside. In winter, the roads around the cave can sometimes become slippery; it is advisable to check road conditions before going during this period. Since crowds may increase on weekends and school holidays, choosing weekday mornings, if possible, offers a more comfortable visiting experience.

By private car: From İnegöl city center, enter the Domaniç - Oylat road junction, then pass Hilmiye Village. The cave is located approximately 1 km south of the village. The total distance from İnegöl is approximately 17-20 km, and from Bursa city center, it is about 70 km. Free parking is available at the cave entrance.

By public transport: You can reach İnegöl from Bursa by bus or minibus. There are shared taxi or minibus services operating towards Oylat from İnegöl; however, as schedules and routes may vary, it is necessary to confirm current information from the local bus station or municipality. The most practical option is a private car or car rental.

After reaching the cave, you get out of the car and ascend to the cave entrance via stairs and a walking path; it is recommended to wear comfortable shoes considering this short walk.

Oylat Cave offers rich frames for photography enthusiasts, both inside and around it. The cave entrance creates a dramatic frame with its location on the canyon slope; especially at midday, the light filtering through the entrance opening, combined with the stalactites, creates impressive compositions.

The dripstone pools and giant kettles in the narrow galleries yield striking results with long exposure techniques. The large stalactite and column groups in the main collapse hall are ideal spots for creating a sense of depth. Outside the cave, the view of Oylat Canyon and the lush green valley provide a valuable backdrop for wide-angle photos. Since light conditions are low inside the cave, you will get much better results if you have a lens with a wide aperture or a tripod with you.

Since the cave's internal temperature remains around 19°C throughout the year, it is recommended to bring a light cardigan or jacket even in summer. As the humidity reaches 90%, the floor and surfaces can be slippery; it is important to choose comfortable walking shoes with non-slip soles.

A walking path with stairs is used to reach the cave. Therefore, access is difficult for individuals with mobility limitations; baby strollers are also not practical on this path. When taking photos, it is necessary to be careful, considering the effect of flash use on the living fauna inside the cave. Since Museum Pass is not valid, it will be practical to have the entrance fee in cash. Tea and coffee can be enjoyed at the cafe in front of the cave entrance.

There is a small cafe right in front of the cave entrance where tea and coffee can be enjoyed. For a more comprehensive dining experience, facilities in the nearby Oylat Thermal Springs region can be preferred; the area offers various food and beverage options along with thermal hotels and guesthouses.

Upon returning to İnegöl, the city's signature dish, İnegöl köftesi (meatballs), is a must-try delicacy. İnegöl köfte restaurants can be easily found in the city center and on main streets. If you are visiting for a day trip, taking light snacks with you will make the visit more comfortable, especially for families with children.

It is possible to make Oylat Cave part of a beautiful day trip from Bursa or İnegöl. You can start from İnegöl early in the morning and first visit Oylat Cave. The cave tour takes 1-2 hours.

Afterwards, you can proceed to the Oylat Thermal Springs area a few kilometers away, relax in the thermal facilities, and have lunch at the restaurants there. On the way back, you can also photograph the forest and canyon views around Hilmiye Village. Stopping at one of the famous köfte restaurants in İnegöl for dinner on your return will be the most enjoyable end to this itinerary. The entire program can be completed in approximately half to a full day.
