Saimbeyli Çatak Highland

The period between May and October is the most suitable time to visit Çatak Highland. During these months, the cool air flowing from the high altitudes of the Taurus Mountains acts as an antidote to the scorching heat of the Adana plain. In early June, the streams fed by melting snow flow most exuberantly, while in July-August, you can feel a refreshing coolness even under the shade of the plane trees.

In October, the highland's color palette changes; leaves turning yellow and orange create a special attraction for photography enthusiasts. Visits are not recommended during winter months due to snowfall and adverse road conditions; the stabilized road can become quite challenging in wet and snowy weather.

The most practical way to reach Çatak Highland is by private vehicle. From Adana city center, follow the D-817 highway to Saimbeyli district center, then switch to the Saimbeyli-Tufanbeyli highway. At the 2nd kilometer of this road, turn left and follow the approximately 3 km stabilized road winding through orchards to reach the highland. The total distance from Adana is about 159 km, and the journey can take 2.5-3 hours.

Those wishing to come by public transport can choose buses or minibuses operating from Adana to Saimbeyli; however, an additional vehicle is needed to reach the highland from the district center. Since a part of the road is stabilized (compacted earth), vehicles with high ground clearance or at least a sturdy passenger car should be preferred; caution is advised, especially in rainy weather.

Çatak Highland is the kind of place you can't pass through without taking your camera or phone. The monumental plane trees are the most iconic photographic element of the highland; their colossal trunks and wide canopies create an almost fairy-tale atmosphere when combined with morning mist.

The rocky passages along the stream flowing down the mountain slope are perfect for achieving silky water effects with long exposure techniques. The shaded resting spots with gazebos that you can find by walking along the Surat River also offer beautiful frames for both landscape and environmental portraits. Wide-angle shots taken in the sunset light during the autumn foliage period in October are particularly impressive.

Don't expect large restaurants or cafes in and around Çatak Highland; this place is truly an area where picnic culture is kept alive. It is best to procure food and drinks from Saimbeyli district center or Adana before coming to the highland.

Saimbeyli's unique local delicacies can also be part of this journey; in small restaurants in the district center, you can find tarhana soup, dried beans, and local tandoor products. It is possible to barbecue in designated areas on the highland; however, it is very important to keep the fire under control and light it only in permitted areas to avoid harming the environment.

For day-trippers, half a day to a full day is sufficient. You can set off from Adana or Saimbeyli early in the morning, reach the highland by noon, have a picnic, explore the surroundings, and return before dark.

If you bring your tent and camping gear, a one or two-night stay allows you to experience the highland much more deeply. The early morning mist, sunset colors, and the clarity of the night sky away from light pollution are privileges only for those who stay overnight. An overnight stay is also a practical option for those planning a long hiking route.

The stabilized road leading to the highland can become slippery in wet and snowy weather; checking the weather forecast before your visit and opting for a four-wheel-drive vehicle if necessary is a smart precaution. There are no fuel stations on the road; refuel in Saimbeyli district center before setting off.

GSM signal quality can be quite limited on the highland; keep this in mind for emergency communication. For campers, bringing sufficient water and provisions is essential; there are no markets or shops on the highland. To protect the natural area, take your trash with you and be careful not to harm the environment when lighting a fire. Since wildlife can also be seen around Çatak, keeping noise to a minimum is important for both nature and an enjoyable visit.

For a one-day Saimbeyli nature tour centered around Çatak Highland, you can consider the following itinerary: Set off from Adana early in the morning, first briefly visit Saimbeyli district center and have a local breakfast. Then, take the Saimbeyli-Tufanbeyli highway and turn off at the 2nd kilometer towards Çatak Highland.

After a midday picnic in the shade of the monumental plane trees on the highland, you can take a short walk along the Surat River. On the way back, visiting Obruk Waterfall, located approximately 5 km from Saimbeyli district center, makes a nice addition to your route; entry to the waterfall is free and it is quite close to Saimbeyli center. It would be appropriate to plan an approximately 8-10 hour day to complete this entire route.
