Lota Lakes are two karstic lakes in the Hafik district of Sivas, formed by the dissolution of gypsum terrain by groundwater, which merge into a single body in spring and separate again in summer.
Lota Lakes are two karstic lakes located 3 km east of Hafik district center, north of the Sivas-Erzurum highway. They were formed as a result of the dissolution of the gypsum (plaster stone) terrain in the region by groundwater; they are approximately 250 meters in diameter and circular in shape. The depth of the large lake reaches 35 meters, while the Small Lota Lake goes down to 18 meters. As the dissolution continues, the depth of the lakes increases over time.
The most striking feature is the seasonal change. In spring, the water level rises with meltwater and rainfall, and the two lakes merge into a single body of water. When summer arrives, the water recedes, and the lakes become visible again as separate entities. They are fed by spring waters from the bottom, which keeps the water cold and stagnant. They host various freshwater fish species, especially carp.
The region is also rich in biodiversity: there are 256 plant taxa belonging to 41 families, 59 of which are endemic. Angling, camping, picnicking, and bird watching can be done here. It is one of the stopping points for migratory birds. Its characteristic as an open basin connected to the Kızılırmak via groundwater also makes the lake scientifically interesting.

Guide's Note
When to Visit?
The most unique state of Lota Lakes emerges in spring. When the water level rises with meltwater and rainfall, the two lakes merge into a single body; during this period, you get to see the true size of the lake. In summer, the water recedes, and the lakes separate again, but temperatures are more suitable for picnicking and camping. In winter, the region freezes, making visits difficult.
How to Get There?
It is 45 km from Sivas city center and approximately 2-3 km from Hafik district center. It is possible to reach the lakes by turning off to Hafik from the Sivas-Erzurum highway. The road connection is good, and going by private car is the most comfortable method. Since public transport is limited, you may need to rent a car or take a short taxi ride from Hafik.
How Much Time to Allocate?
1-2 hours are sufficient for a walk by the lake, taking photos, and relaxing. If you plan to have a picnic or go fishing, allocating half a day offers a more relaxed pace. It is also possible to combine it with other spots in Hafik (like Hafik Lake) to create a one-day nature route.
Route Suggestion
Start from Sivas city center, visit Hafik district, then take the short 3 km road to the lakes. There are other lakes in the region such as Hafik Lake and Tödürge Lake. If you have time, you can add these bodies of water to your route on the same day to create a 'Sivas lakes tour'.
Things to Consider
Infrastructure by the lake is limited; do not expect services like toilets or buffets. You need to bring your own food and drinks. It is advisable to be cautious about swimming as the depth reaches up to 35 meters in some spots. The area is designated as a 'Strictly Protected Sensitive Area', so it is important to visit without harming nature.
Photo Spots
Photos taken during the spring when the lakes merge better reflect the vastness of the water. In the morning, the light hits the lake surface more softly, which is a suitable time for reflection shots in the calm waters.
General Information
Lota Lakes are a karstic lake system formed by the dissolution of gypsum (plaster stone) terrain. The total diameter of the two lakes is approximately 250 meters; they are connected to the Kızılırmak basin via groundwater. 256 plant taxa are recorded in the region, 59 of which are endemic species. This also makes the area scientifically valuable.
