Soğmatar Ancient City, located in Yağmurlu Village, 80 km east of Şanlıurfa, is a 2nd-century AD Roman cult center; it bears traces of multiple belief traditions with its rock tombs, Pognon Cave, and Sacred Hill.
Soğmatar Ancient City is located within the borders of Yağmurlu Village, in the Eyyübiye district of Şanlıurfa. This area, reached about 15 km after Şuayb Ancient City, dates back to the Roman period of the 2nd century AD; however, its history extends to the Bronze Age. The rock tombs in the necropolis area point to an interesting tradition: people would enter the tombs themselves to visit their dead.
Among the prominent structures of the area are Pognon Cave, which served as a hidden place of worship, the Sacred Hill, which allows you to observe the entire area from above, and structural remains scattered on the surrounding hills. Soğmatar is an archaeological site whose value has not yet been fully discovered, offering concrete traces of the coexistence of different religions and belief traditions. Due to its name similarity with the Sumatar sub-district, it is sometimes confused, so it is useful to confirm the correct location before planning a visit.

Soğmatar Ancient City is located in a rugged and desolate corner of the Tektek Mountains, away from crowded tourist routes. The vast majority of visitors report arriving at the site with almost no other tourists; this makes the unique silence and mystical atmosphere of the place even more pronounced. The rock formations, caves, and rock-carved reliefs have been found so impressive by some visitors that they evoke ancient Egypt. The human-figured reliefs inside a cave and the sun and moon sculptures on the hill are particularly striking.
The site does not require an entrance fee and is open every day of the week. It is reported that children living in the village sometimes guide visitors to the best of their knowledge. This ancient settlement, rich in historical and religious layers, is considered worth visiting if it's on your way; however, it's important to shape your expectations beforehand.
On the other hand, multiple visitors emphasize that the area is neglected and abandoned. Here are some points to pay attention to:
- Lack of signage and information boards: There are no directional signs or information panels in the area; it can be difficult to understand which structure is which.
- Absence of protective measures: No protective arrangements have been made around the historical remains; this has bothered some visitors.
- General disarray and desolation: A few visitors stated that they felt uneasy due to the desolate and disorganized appearance of the area, even avoiding getting out of their cars.

Best Time to Visit
The most suitable periods to visit Soğmatar are spring and autumn. In the spring months from March to May, the region is both green and cool; you can comfortably explore the rock tombs and open areas. September-November offers similar comfort.
In summer, the harsh heat of Southeastern Anatolia is also felt here; especially during midday, visiting the area can be quite tiring. In winter, cold and sometimes rainy weather makes the dirt roads muddy. Setting off early in the morning is always advantageous both to avoid the heat and to catch the best light for photography.
How to Get to Soğmatar
Soğmatar Ancient City is approximately 80 km from Şanlıurfa city center and 53 km from Harran. The most practical way to reach here is by private car. From Şanlıurfa, proceed towards Harran; after passing Şuayb Ancient City, continue for about 15 km more to reach Soğmatar. Although there are signs along the way, entering the address of Yağmurlu Village into navigation applications gives more reliable results.
Organized daily tours from Şanlıurfa are also available; these tours usually cover Soğmatar along with Harran and Şuayb. You can park your car near the school, close to the site, and walk a short distance to the ancient city.
Suggested Itinerary: Harran – Şuayb – Soğmatar
Starting from Şanlıurfa, you can first visit Harran Ancient City. With its conical-roofed traditional houses and historic castle, Harran deserves a half-day trip. Then, it's logical to proceed to Şuayb Ancient City and leave Soğmatar as the last stop of the day; you'll benefit from the cooler weather and soft light in the afternoon.
It's possible to see these three points in one day, but you need to leave early in the morning. If you allocate at least 1.5-2 hours for each area, you can explore without rushing. Don't forget to bring plenty of water, light snacks, and sunscreen; the number of facilities in the region is quite limited.
Photo Spots
The place that offers the most powerful photo opportunities in Soğmatar is the Sacred Hill. From the summit of the hill, the silhouette of the surrounding plains and other hills creates an impressive view, especially in the golden hour light. The entrances to the rock tombs and the carved walls offer rich material for detailed photography.
Since the interior of Pognon Cave is dim, a lens with a wide aperture or a flashlight will make your job easier. The tomb entrances in the necropolis area are also suitable spots for dramatic perspective experiments. The soft light and long shadows in the early morning best reflect the mysterious atmosphere of the area.
What to Eat, Where to Eat
Food options in Soğmatar and its surroundings are almost non-existent; it is difficult to find any restaurant other than a small shop in the village. It is much healthier to plan your meal in Şanlıurfa before setting off or on your return to the city.
Şanlıurfa cuisine is an experience in itself: çiğ köfte, lahmacun, kaburga dolması, and katmer are among the flavors you must try. Some village restaurants along the Harran route also offer simple but satisfying meals. We strongly recommend taking packaged food and at least 1.5 liters of water with you.
Things to Consider Before Visiting
The area is largely open-air with very limited shaded areas. In summer, the risk of sunstroke should not be overlooked; a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen can be considered mandatory. When entering rock tombs, you may need to bend or pass through low entrances, so choose comfortable and sturdy-soled shoes.
Soğmatar and Sumatar (Yardımcı sub-district) are often confused; entering the address of Yağmurlu Village into navigation or a map will prevent this problem. Since the number of guides or information signs in the area may be limited, researching beforehand or going with a local guide will make your visit much more efficient.
