Kurul Castle Complex

The castle was built on a sharp rock mass. This natural defensive position seems to have been preferred during the Hellenistic period. In 2010, the Ordu Governorship and Museum Directorate began excavations, which continued between 2011-2016 and resumed in 2018. Among the findings are terracotta roof tiles, ceramic fragments of wall structures, and temple-castle wall ruins dating back up to 3000 years. The marble Cybele statue found at the castle gate in 2016 is specifically mentioned in literature as it is the first example of a Hellenistic period Cybele figure found in situ. In 2018, three more statues were found in the same area.

It is located within the borders of Bayadı Village, 13 km from Ordu city center. There is an asphalt road to the castle, and private car is the most practical option for transportation. It can also be reached by bus or taxi; it's about a 20-25 minute drive from the city center. Thanks to the 500 square meter parking area, those arriving by car do not experience parking problems.

The excavation site is occasionally closed to visitors while work is ongoing. Such closures have occurred in the past, so always check the current status before you go. In spring and autumn, the weather is more favorable for walking and spending time on the observation terrace. In summer, it can feel hot in unshaded areas during midday.

The observation terraces at the top of the rock offer a wide frame overlooking the Ordu plain and the Melet River. The castle gate section and the tunnel-cistern structures provide different views at different times depending on the stone texture and the angle of daylight. When the evening lighting is turned on, it is also possible to see the silhouette of the castle from a distance.

1 to 1.5 hours is sufficient to climb the stairs and visit the excavation area, the tunnel, the cistern, and the observation terraces. Those who wish to spend time in the picnic area can extend this period. If you are planning a day trip in Ordu, allocating Kurul Castle to the morning and other stops in the city center to the afternoon will make the flow more comfortable.

The area is a 1st degree archaeological and natural site; entering excavation areas or collecting artifacts is prohibited. Since the stairs and walking paths can be stony, choose comfortable shoes. Remember that the area may be completely or partially closed during excavation work. Checking the announcements of the Ordu Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before your visit is useful to avoid surprises.
