Getting there From Yatağan town center…
QUICK ANSWER

Stratonikeia is an ancient city in Yatağan, Muğla, built of marble, housing Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman period layers; entry is free.

Stratonikeia is located in Eskihisar Village, approximately 6-7 km west of Yatağan town center, on the Yatağan-Milas highway. Named after Stratonike, the wife of Seleucid King Antiochus I, who re-established the city in the 3rd Century BC, the city is one of Anatolia's most unique archaeological sites with a history of uninterrupted settlement spanning thousands of years. Its nickname, City of Gladiators, earned when retired gladiators settled here, has shaped not only the city's historical but also its cultural identity. The extensive use of marble in its construction and its flat topography make the visit enjoyable both visually and physically.

Excavation work has been ongoing for years by a team led by Prof. Dr. Bilal Söğüt; new structures are unearthed every season. Visitors can personally see architectural layers ranging from the Roman period to the Ottoman period on the same streets. The council building is among the best-preserved ancient structures. The Gymnasium, however, is located in the inner parts of the city, at a point where signs are scarce; it's easy to miss if you explore without a map. Visitors say they can observe new mosaics unearthed during excavations on-site and encounter a different face of the city with each visit. It is also frequently mentioned in comments that the theater section is temporarily closed due to renovation work. The restoration of Ottoman-era village houses at the city's entrance is also noticeable.

What distinguishes Stratonikeia from other ancient cities is the presence of people still living within it. The residents of Eskihisar Village continue their daily lives among the ancient structures; this gives visitors the feeling that history is not a frozen exhibit but a breathing environment. There are also small cafes and souvenir shops in the city. If you happen to visit, we recommend listening to the local guides' stories; visitors say these conversations make the trip much more meaningful.

Best Time to Visit

The ideal times to visit Stratonikeia are April–May and September–October. During these seasons, the weather is suitable for sightseeing; as the area has very limited tree shade, visiting during midday in mid-summer can be tiring. Visitors especially prefer between 08:30 – 10:00 or late afternoon in July-August. If you come in season, you also have the chance to eat fruit from the fig trees among the ancient streets.

How to Get There

Stratonikeia is located in Eskihisar Village, approximately 7 km west of Yatağan town center, on the Yatağan-Milas highway. Coming by private car is the most practical option; there is a parking area at the village entrance. Minibuses operating from Yatağan towards Milas also use this route; simply tell the driver you want to get off at Eskihisar. Transportation from Muğla or Milas is also possible via the same route.

How Much Time to Allocate

Stratonikeia is a relatively easy ancient city to explore thanks to its flat topography. While 1.5 hours may be sufficient for a superficial tour, 2-3 hours is a more realistic duration for those who want to carefully examine the structures, ongoing excavation areas, and village texture. If you want to observe the excavation work on-site or chat with local guides, you can even spend half a day.

Photo Spots

The council building, with its preserved structure, is one of the most impressive photo spots. Street photos taken between the ancient columns also offer very powerful shots. The mosaics unearthed in the excavation areas contain great details for close-up shots. The restored Ottoman-era village houses at the city's entrance offer a good opportunity to capture different layers of history in a single frame. In terms of light, between 08:30 – 10:00 provides softer shadows.

Food and Drink

There are small cafes within the ancient city. Drinking tea and coffee at these establishments run by local residents is a great opportunity to both rest and soak in the atmosphere of Eskihisar Village. Visitors state that chatting with local guides who were born and raised here takes the trip to a whole new dimension. For a more comprehensive meal, it is necessary to head to Yatağan town center.

Things to Pay Attention To

The theater section may be closed to visitors due to renovation work; check the current status on-site. The Gymnasium is located in the inner part of the city and at a poorly signposted spot; it can easily be missed if explored without a map. Since the area is largely shadeless, plenty of water, a hat, and sunscreen are essential in summer. Follow the signs in areas where excavation work is ongoing. As the entrance fee application has been reported to vary from time to time, it would be wise to carry cash with you.

About Stratonikeia

Stratonikeia is not just an ancient city; it is a living historical stage where life has continued uninterrupted from the 3rd millennium BC to the present day, bearing the traces of Roman, Seljuk, and Ottoman periods on the same streets. It is recorded in historical records that the first implementation of a price ceiling against inflation took place in Stratonikeia, which is considered one of the largest cities in the world built of marble. Excavation work uncovers new findings every year; this makes each visit different from the last.
