Letoon Ancient City

Letoon was not just an ancient city; it was the common place of worship and gathering for the entire Lycian region in ancient times. Representatives of the cities belonging to the Lycian League would gather here, holding both religious ceremonies and making political decisions. This dual function makes Letoon one of the most unique sacred sites in Anatolia.

There are three temples located close to each other on the site: these structures, dedicated to Leto, Artemis, and Apollo, reflect the architectural understanding of the Hellenistic period. The multilingual inscriptions (Lycian, Greek, and Aramaic) unearthed during excavations are considered extremely valuable documents for the history of Anatolian linguistics.

Spring and autumn are the most productive seasons for Letoon. In April-May, the vegetation is green, the weather is mild, and tourist density has not yet reached its peak. In September-October, summer temperatures have eased; during this period, it is also possible to see excavation teams on site.

In July-August, the area can be quite hot during midday; prefer early morning or late afternoon. In winter, sturdy shoes are essential as the ground can be muddy and waterlogged during rainy weather.

Letoon is located on the 65th kilometer of the Fethiye-Kaş highway (D400), near Kumluova village. It is approximately 50-55 km from Fethiye city center and about 45 km from Kaş. If you are traveling by car, simply follow the signs along the road.

If you prefer public transport, you can take minibuses departing from Fethiye or Kaş bus terminals towards Kumluova. Since Xanthos Ancient City is only 4 km away, visiting both cities by car on the same day is quite practical.

While it is possible to visit Letoon alone, the most logical option is to combine it with Xanthos Ancient City on the same day. The 4 km distance between the two sites takes a few minutes by car. You can start from Xanthos in the morning, move to Letoon in the afternoon, and then return to Fethiye or Kaş.

If you are passing through this section of the Lycian Way, Letoon is already on the route; if you are planning a hiking route, check the regional map beforehand.

The most striking shots in Letoon are obtained from the temple columns and theater steps. Water turtles swimming in puddles in the theater area also offer an interesting photo opportunity; if you look carefully, you can easily spot them.

The mosaics located in the inner parts of the ancient city show the best detail in the morning light. The miniature model displayed at the entrance is both informative for understanding the general layout of the area and a noteworthy spot for photography.

Letoon's ground conditions vary by season. Especially in winter and late spring, some of the ruins can be submerged in puddles; therefore, choose closed-toe, sturdy-soled shoes. Some visitors note that poor drainage makes it difficult to approach certain areas.

Since the area is relatively small, it can be explored in 45 minutes to 1.5 hours. Do not pass inside without examining the miniature model at the entrance; seeing the general plan of the area beforehand will make your visit much more efficient. Müzekart holders can enter for free.

Letoon has a smaller area compared to larger ancient cities. 45 minutes to 1.5 hours is sufficient to comfortably examine the temples, theater, and mosaics. Those who want to take photos or closely observe the excavation areas may allocate a little more time.

When planning a visit on the same day as Xanthos, it is reasonable to allow a total of half a day for both sites. If you start before noon, you will have time left for Fethiye or Kaş in the afternoon.
