Kaunos Ancient City

The best time to visit Kaunos is during April–May and September–October. During these periods, the weather is suitable for walking, and the crowds are relatively smaller. In July–August, the area gets extremely hot at noon; visitors state that carrying an umbrella during these hours will significantly ease your visit. Going early in the morning or closer to evening will help you avoid the heat and have a calmer experience.

The most enjoyable way to reach Kaunos is by boat from Dalyan. Boats departing from Dalyan pier will drop you off at the archaeological site pier; from there, you can reach the ancient city with about a 10-minute walk. This route also offers the opportunity to see the Dalyan River view up close.

Those who wish to come by road can reach Çandır Neighborhood by car via Ortaca or Köyceğiz. Since Köyceğiz center is a bit far, driving is more practical. There is a small parking lot for about 10 cars in front of the entrance.

1.5 to 2 hours is sufficient to comfortably explore Kaunos, from the theater to the rock tombs. The area is larger than expected; starting from one end and returning takes about 80–90 minutes. Since the rock tombs are located in a separate section about 1 km from the entrance point, make sure to include them in your plan. For those who want to take photos or examine the structures in detail, extending the visit up to 2.5 hours would be sensible.

The most powerful photo spot in Kaunos is the ancient theater. The panoramic view extending from the seating steps to the Dalyan plain and river is one of the most shared frames by visitors. Photos taken while passing by boat from the Dalyan side are also quite impressive for seeing the rock tombs from the best angle. The mosaic floor of the Byzantine Church offers an interesting detail for close-up shots. You can also stop at the scenic viewpoints along the road and take pictures.

There is no market or beverage sales point in the area; it is recommended to bring enough water and snacks with you, as prices at the sales points in the entrance area are high. Seating and coffee areas are quite limited.

It is possible to encounter wild animals such as snakes, large lizards, squirrels, and turtles among the stones. Not getting too close to the stones and not lifting them with your hands is an important safety precaution. Since the ground is uneven, choosing comfortable, closed-toe shoes will make your trip much more comfortable.

Kaunos served as an important port city in ancient times. Its inclusion on UNESCO's Tentative List of World Heritage Sites highlights the international importance of the area. Traces of different civilizations are found together in the city: the Greek theater, Roman bath, agora, stoa, monopteros, acropolis, and the mosaic-floored Byzantine Church are among the most prominent. The King's Rock Tombs, carved into the rock approximately 2,400 years ago, have become a symbol of the region. Visitors believe that the area is growing with ongoing excavations each year, and more structures will be unearthed.
