Kadyana Ancient City

The best times for Kadyana are April–May and September–October. During these months, the weather is cool, the vegetation is vibrant, and hiking conditions are very favorable. Thanks to the high altitude, even in mid-summer, the climate is 5–8 degrees cooler compared to coastal towns, so visits are possible in July–August as well. Visiting in winter is not recommended as dirt paths can become slippery during rainy periods.

The most practical way to reach Kadyana Ancient City is by private car or rental car. The road to the city, which is approximately 15–20 km from Fethiye city center, becomes quite narrow and winding in the final section. Visitors state that this road offers both an attractive and attention-demanding driving experience. Small and highly maneuverable vehicles should be preferred over large ones. Reaching by public transport is almost impossible; a taxi from Fethiye or car rental is the most logical alternative. There is a parking area at the archaeological site.

For those who want to quickly glance at Kadyana, 1.5 hours might be enough; however, this time is not sufficient to grasp the true character of the city. If you want to fully experience all the ruins, viewpoints, and the atmosphere within the forest by following the trail that circles the mountain, you need to allocate at least half a day, ideally a full day. One point stands out in the comments: Kadyana is not a place to visit like a souvenir shop; it is an ancient city that should be researched and read about before going.

Start from the parking area and follow the marked main trail. This route, which circles the mountain, will take you to the theater ruins, city walls, and viewpoints overlooking Fethiye. While directional signs are generally sufficient, they can be missing at some junctions; downloading a satellite map beforehand is a safe choice. Some parts of the trail are quite steep, so it is necessary to pace yourself well and take frequent breaks. Research the location of the relief sarcophagus beforehand; visitors sometimes report difficulty finding the sarcophagus within the archaeological site.

Kadyana's most impressive photo opportunities are hidden in the panoramic viewpoints that open to Fethiye bay and the surrounding mountains. Especially before noon, the light angle is much better at these spots. Mossy stones in the forest, scattered column fragments, and the partially standing theater also provide material for strong compositions. If you carry a wide-angle lens, don't miss the shots where the city wall remains meet the mountain silhouette.

There are sinkholes and collapsed areas within the archaeological site; although these areas are fenced, it is necessary to move carefully. The number of staff on site is very limited, sometimes none; it can be difficult to get help if you encounter a problem. The terrain is extremely challenging for elderly visitors and those with mobility limitations: steep inclines and uneven ground pose a serious obstacle for this group. Be sure to take your trash with you; visitors are particularly sensitive about this.

There are no food and drink establishments immediately around Kadyana. Fethiye city center has many restaurants and cafes for every budget; it makes sense to plan lunch or dinner in Fethiye before or after your visit. We definitely recommend taking enough water, snacks, and sun protection when going to the archaeological site.
