Kırkkaşık Bedesteni

Considering Tarsus's Mediterranean climate, April-June and September-November are the most suitable times to visit the bedesten. In mid-summer, the city can be quite hot; during this period, coming between 08:00-10:00 in the morning or towards the evening is much more enjoyable. In winter, the climate is mild, and visitor density decreases; it's a good time for those who want to have a quiet chat with the shopkeepers.

Kırkkaşık Bedesteni is a rectangular-plan covered bazaar built during the Ottoman period. The structure, entirely made of cut stone, consists of seven domes and twenty-one rooms. In addition to the two main gates on the east and west, there is another barrel-vaulted gate on the north. The most striking feature of the building is the spoon decorations on its exterior; the bedesten's name comes from here. Formerly known as Beyaz Çarşı (White Bazaar), the structure continues to be an important part of Tarsus's commercial and cultural memory.

Drinking basil sherbet and local coffees at the small businesses right at the entrance of the bedesten and in its immediate vicinity has become an indispensable part of a visit to Tarsus. The spoon reliefs and cut stone texture on the exterior of the bedesten offer interesting details for photography. The domed interior, especially with light filtering through the domes at midday, provides beautiful shots. The areas in front of the archways and the narrow bazaar corridors are suitable spots for both architectural and street photography. The colorful displays of the shops and copper items also create a lively atmosphere within the frame.

Kırkkaşık Bedesteni is a relatively small structure; for those who know this, there will be no disappointment. Its true value lies in its architectural integrity and the vibrant commercial life within. Since it is within walking distance of other historical sites in Tarsus, it is much more efficient to consider it as part of a city tour rather than a standalone visit. Those arriving by car may have difficulty finding parking in the narrow streets; choosing a nearby parking lot will save time.
