The most suitable period to visit Mavga Castle is during April-June and September-October. During these periods, the weather is mild, the paths are passable, and the view is at its clearest. In July-August, although the temperature may be lower than the city center due to the altitude, the sun can be quite harsh; it is recommended to start early. In winter, roads leading to Kozlar plateau may close due to snow and mud, making a visit during this period risky.

To reach Mavga Castle, first come to Mut district from Mersin city center; the distance between Mersin and Mut is approximately 120 kilometers. From Mut, you need to drive approximately 15 km further in the direction of Kozlar plateau. While most of the roads are asphalt, the final sections are quite rough and narrow; a high-clearance vehicle or 4x4 is essential. There is no direct public transport access. Taking a taxi or a rental car from Mut is the most practical option. Before setting off, it would be beneficial to inquire about current road conditions from local residents or Mut Municipality.

Mavga Castle is suitable for a half-day exploration trip. Reaching the end of the walking path and returning takes approximately 3-4 hours. Since it is not possible to climb the castle, this is the time required to observe the structure from a distance and take photographs. For those who want to explore the region more comprehensively, the surrounding caves and the nature of Kozlar plateau are also worth spending time on. On the way back to Mut center, it is possible to visit other historical sites in the vicinity, such as the ancient city of Adrassos.

The most impressive photographs of Mavga Castle are taken from the rocky viewpoint at the end of the path. When you reach the edge of the rock, the castle appears directly in front of you, creating a powerful composition with the deep valley view. Visitors state that the shots taken from this point are extremely impressive. Especially before noon, when the light directly illuminates the castle, is more suitable for photography. Cave entrances and rock carvings also offer interesting details for close-up shots.

Before visiting Mavga Castle, keep a few important points in mind:

It is not possible to climb the castle. There is no safe way to ascend the structure; visitors can only observe from a distance and take photographs. Since the terrain along the path is rocky and steep, sturdy hiking shoes are essential. Don't forget to bring enough water and snacks; there are no sales points in the area. Due to rough roads, going with standard vehicles may damage your car. It is recommended to go to the castle in groups of at least two people rather than alone.

It is possible to plan a full-day trip by combining Mavga Castle with other historical and natural sites in Mersin's Mut district. Depart early from Mut to Mavga Castle, complete the path walk and photo break. In the afternoon, you can visit the ruins of the ancient city of Adrassos; this area is also located near Mut. On the way back, Dağpazarı Church stands out as another unique historical stop in the region. End the day by stopping for dinner in Mut center.

Mavga Castle was built by the Anatolian Seljuk Sultan Alaeddin Keykubat in 1230. The most unique aspect of the structure is that it was built not with traditional stonemasonry, but by carving natural rocks. Inside the castle, rooms, kitchens, irrigation troughs, and water cisterns plastered with Khorasan mortar were directly carved into the rock. In the tower at the northeast end, there is a rectangular niche with an Arabic inscription inside. Rock tombs with small, almost square or rectangular entrances have also been identified among the caves. Although the city walls are largely destroyed, the remaining tower ruins give an idea of the original scale of the structure. Among visitors, it is often commented that this place feels more like an ancient city than a castle.
