Gazipaşa Primary School is a historic building with carved stone decorations in Mardin's Şar Neighborhood, whose construction began in 1892 as a Syriac merchant's mansion and has been used as a school since 1934.
Gazipaşa Primary School stands out as a still-active educational institution right in the heart of Mardin's historical fabric. Its construction began in 1892 by master architect Lole and was completed in 1907 as the mansion of a wealthy merchant named Cebbur from the Syriac Orthodox Community. The building, also known as Beyt Cebbure, was sold to Mardin Deputy Abdurrezzak Şatana in the early years of the Republic, and then passed into the hands of the Special Provincial Administration Directorate. It has been providing uninterrupted education since 1934.
Each floor of the four-story building is designed for a different function: the ground floor houses a cellar and stable, the second floor has a large hall and eight rooms, the third floor has three rooms, and the fourth floor contains ten rooms. The interiors of the rooms are adorned with carved stone decorations, and the craftsmanship of each room is distinct from the others. Today, 128 students are educated in 16 classrooms. Since the school is an active educational institution, it is not possible to enter, but its exterior facade and stone masonry are considered a special stop for those who want to see Mardin's civil architecture.

Guide's Note
When to Visit
Since the building is an active educational institution, there is no specific visiting schedule; you can see the exterior facade at any time. In summer, Mardin is very hot at noon, so early morning or late afternoon is more suitable for walking. In winter, the texture of the stone facade is more clearly visible during the sunny afternoon hours.
How to Get There
From Latifiye Mosque, head east and turn into the street on the right before reaching İnekler Çarşısı (Cows' Bazaar), and the building will appear in front of you. Driving in Mardin's narrow city center streets is not practical; walking from the bazaar area is both easier and offers the opportunity to see other historical buildings along the way.
City Transportation
Public transportation in Mardin city center is limited, and most travelers explore the city on foot. Gazipaşa Primary School is close to the Grand Mosque and the bazaar area, so it can be included in Mardin's classic historical walking route. The most practical method is to leave your car in the square area and continue on foot.
Route Suggestion
Gazipaşa Primary School is more a part of a route showcasing Mardin's stone architecture than a standalone travel destination. It makes sense to add it to your itinerary while visiting the Grand Mosque, Latifiye Mosque, and the bazaar streets. Starting from the bazaar in the morning and arriving in this area towards noon is a good timing to see the effect of light on the stone.
How Much Time to Allocate
Since the building can only be viewed from the outside, 5-10 minutes is sufficient. If you've allocated one day in Mardin, this stop should be considered a small break point that can be squeezed in between your bazaar and mosque tour.
Photo Spots
The carved decorations on the building's stone facade and the large entrance door are the most striking details for photography. A wide-angle shot from across the street is more suitable for framing the four-story facade as a whole.
Things to Note
Since the building is an active school, there are student entries and exits during class hours, which can make the street crowded at these times. As it is not possible to enter, expectations should be adjusted accordingly.
