Osman Hamdi Bey House Museum

Osman Hamdi Bey (1842-1910) is one of the most versatile figures of the Ottoman period: a painter, archaeologist, and museologist who simultaneously held these identities and elevated the Istanbul Archaeology Museum to international standards. This mansion, which he had built on the Eskihisar coast of Gebze in 1884, was not just a summer house for him, but also a center of production. Osman Hamdi Bey, who stayed here for 26 summers, completed most of his paintings, which are now considered classics of Turkish art, in this painting studio.

During World War I, the mansion was allocated to the headquarters command, taking on a different function. Used for various purposes for many years, the structure was converted into a museum in 2006 after an extensive restoration process. Today, visitors take a short journey into Osman Hamdi Bey's world as they explore the original spaces, including the painting studio and boathouse.

The mansion's garden and terrace overlooking the gulf are at their most beautiful in spring and autumn. Coming to Gebze from Istanbul by Marmaray or suburban train and then taking a dolmuş is also a practical option.

The most striking photo angle of the mansion is the garden terrace overlooking the Gulf of Izmit. During sunset, the play of light over the gulf offers quite impressive views. The original 1884 architecture of the building, especially the wooden details and window frames, are also interesting subjects for photography. You may need to obtain permission from the museum administration for photography inside; remember to ask before your visit.

Around Eskihisar pier, there are small cafes and fish restaurants with gulf views. For fresh fish and seafood, the establishments around the pier are a good choice. Since the museum is located on a sloping plot, there are inclined sections on the path leading to the entrance; therefore, wheelchair access and stroller use might be difficult.
