The Gebze Historical Water Cabinet is an Ottoman-era water structure located in Güzeller Neighborhood, Kocaeli, built in 1644 by Serdar İbrahim Pasha. With its square plan architecture and a well approximately 20 meters deep, it was constructed to solve the city's drinking water problem.
Gebze's drinking water problem was an issue awaiting resolution for centuries. In 1644, Serdar İbrahim Pasha had 40 wells dug in the region to solve this problem fundamentally. The fresh water obtained from these wells was collected in the Water Cabinet structure, which still stands today, and distributed to the city. Some sources state that the structure has a history dating back to the 16th century and that water structures were also built in the region during the period of Çoban Mustafa Pasha; however, the current structure is identified with the year 1644.
The structure, which draws attention with its square plan and pyramid-roofed architecture, is a concrete example of Ottoman-era water engineering in Gebze. Inside, there is a large well approximately 20 meters deep. To permanently solve this problem, Serdar İbrahim Pasha had 40 wells dug in the vicinity in 1644 and built the Water Cabinet structure to collect the fresh water obtained from these wells at a single point.
