Kasr-ı Hümayun Palace Museum

Kasr-ı Hümayun is a historical palace structure used by Ottoman sultans as an official residence and hunting ground in Izmit, now converted into a museum. It holds a special place in Turkey's cultural heritage as the only Ottoman palace complex built outside Istanbul. As one of the rare examples of Ottoman palace architecture extending beyond the walls of Istanbul, it also serves as an important reference point for history researchers and architecture enthusiasts.

The interior spaces, organized as a museum, house artifacts from the Ottoman period and exhibition areas documenting palace life. The garden and walkways around the structure also transform the visit into a more comprehensive experience.

The most suitable periods to visit Kasr-ı Hümayun are the months between April–June and September–November. During these periods, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold, allowing you to comfortably explore both the interior spaces and the garden. In summer, Izmit can be quite hot and humid; visiting early in the morning or late in the afternoon during this time would be a better choice.

Visitor density is significantly lower on weekdays. Weekends and public holidays can be crowded, so if you prefer a quieter visit, choose a weekday.

The museum is located in Izmit city center, making transportation quite easy. Those wishing to come by public transport can use the city buses departing from various points in Izmit. It is possible to reach the museum by walking approximately 13 minutes from the nearest train station, Kırkikievler Train Station.

For those arriving by private car, parking is available around the museum. Visitors from Istanbul can easily reach Izmit via the Osmangazi Bridge or by train; the distance to Istanbul is approximately 100 km.

Izmit is a city known nationwide for its pişmaniye dessert. After your museum visit, you can try local delicacies unique to Izmit at restaurants in the city center. Pişmaniye, a dessert that has become a symbol of the city, is also frequently chosen as a souvenir.

Tea gardens, patisseries, and various restaurants are available in the central areas within walking distance of the museum. Planning your museum visit for the morning and then taking a break at a restaurant in the city center for lunch could be a good option.

Kasr-ı Hümayun offers multiple shooting spots for photography enthusiasts. The exterior facade of the palace and its entrance gate create a classic frame. The walkways and green areas in the garden also provide a natural backdrop.

From certain points of the palace, with its dominant position overlooking Izmit, it is also possible to get a view of the city. Exterior facade photos in the morning light yield very successful results. We recommend asking museum staff for information on photography rules inside the building.

Due to the historical nature of some parts of the building, wheelchair access may be limited. It is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes to explore the garden area. Allocating at least 1.5 to 2 hours for the museum will make your visit more productive.
