Izmit Atatürk Monument

The Izmit Atatürk Monument holds a distinct historical value as it is among the monuments in Turkey that were built and completed during Atatürk's lifetime. Commissioned in 1933 to be ready for the 10th-anniversary celebrations of the Republic, the work was shaped from bronze by Nijat Sirer, who combined the identities of architect and sculptor. Financed by the joint contributions of the Kocaeli Province and the people of Izmit, the monument has remained an integral part of the city's public memory ever since.

Hürriyet Street, where the statue is located, is an axis where Izmit's commercial and social life is concentrated. Thus, the monument stands not in a museum or a private area, but right in the midst of the city's daily flow; an ordinary yet meaningful reference point for every Izmit resident passing by.

The monument, located in an open area, can be visited any day of the year, at any time of day. On October 29, Republic Day, and November 10, Atatürk Commemoration Day, the surrounding square comes alive with official ceremonies and citizen participation; a different atmosphere is created around the monument on these dates.

For those who want to take photos, morning hours are more advantageous; the angle of light highlights the texture of the bronze surface, and the crowd has not yet intensified. In mid-summer, bazaar traffic and pedestrian density may increase during midday.

The statue is located in the heart of Izmit city center on Hürriyet Street. It is approximately 1 km from Izmit bus station, so it is possible to reach it on foot. You can get there by taking city buses on the Izmit Merkez lines and walking a short distance.

For those coming from Istanbul, it is quite easy to reach Izmit via Marmaray or E-5 and then transfer to the city center with local transportation. Those arriving by car can park in paid parking lots around Hürriyet Street or in free areas on side streets.

The Izmit Atatürk Monument, along with the nearby Izmit Clock Tower, forms one of the most photographed corners of the city. To capture both structures in the same frame, a wide-angle shot from the opposite sidewalk can be preferred.

The color and texture of the bronze material offer different appearances with changing light throughout the day; especially during the golden hours before sunset, warm tones add a distinct depth to the monument. On national holidays, the flags hung around and the gathered crowd also create a good opportunity for documentary-style shots.

Hürriyet Street and its surroundings are one of Izmit's busiest commercial axes, so dining options are abundant. Offering a wide range from street food to sit-down restaurants, pişmaniye, unique to Izmit, is a must-try dessert in this area; you can buy this handmade sweet, considered a symbol of the city, fresh from traditional shops in the bazaar.

For lunch, the meatball and kebab restaurants in the bazaar are a good choice; in the late afternoon, it is possible to reach cafe and bistro options with a short walk towards Seka Park.

The Atatürk Monument is a natural starting point for exploring Izmit's historical center. From here, you can walk to the Izmit Clock Tower, then to the Izmit Atatürk and Redif Museum. After the museum, the Kocaeli Archaeology and Ethnography Museum can also be added to the route.

For the afternoon, the Seka Park walking route offers both relaxation and views of Izmit Bay. All these points are within walking distance of each other, creating a route that can be easily completed in half a day without using a car.

Since the monument is located in an open area and on a public street, there are no entrance fees or visiting hour restrictions. During peak traffic hours, Hürriyet Street can be crowded with vehicle and pedestrian traffic; choosing quieter hours for photography will make the visit easier.

On national commemoration and holiday days, surrounding roads may be partially closed; it is recommended to come by public transport on these dates. The sidewalks around the statue are suitable for wheelchairs and strollers.
