Hüseyin Pasha Mosque

Hüseyin Pasha Mosque was built by Kapudan Pasha Küçük Hüseyin Pasha, one of the interesting figures in Ottoman history. Hüseyin Pasha, Sultan Selim III's foster brother, held high-ranking positions in the Ottoman navy and became one of the prominent statesmen of his era. The mosque has survived to the present day as part of İzmit's Ottoman religious heritage and continues to be open for worship.

When considered together with its adjacent cemetery, the structure is more than just a mosque; it embodies a small-scale külliye where the Ottoman waqf tradition is materialized. The gravestones in the cemetery offer examples worthy of study from an epigraphic and art historical perspective.

Considering that İzmit experiences hot and humid summers, the period between April–June and September–November offers a more comfortable visiting experience for Hüseyin Pasha Mosque. Since the mosque is open during prayer times, those wishing to see the interior should choose hours between congregational prayers. Also, keep in mind that the mosque might be crowded around noon on Fridays.

The mosque is located on Gülümser Street in the Çukurbağ neighborhood, close to İzmit city center. It is possible to reach it by walking from İzmit bus terminal or the city center in 10–15 minutes. If you are coming by car, try to find suitable parking nearby due to the narrow streets; parking in the center and walking is often more practical. After arriving at İzmit center by public transport, you can easily reach it by taxi or on foot.

Instead of visiting Hüseyin Pasha Mosque alone, combining it with other structures that form İzmit's historical corridor provides a much more efficient travel experience. The route can start with Orhan Mosque (İzmit's conquest mosque and where the first adhan was recited in Kocaeli) and include Süleyman Pasha Bath. Hüseyin Pasha Mosque is also a natural part of this route. A walking tour covering all these points can fit into half a day.

The mosque's facade, integrated with the street fabric, offers interesting shots for neighborhood photography. The Ottoman-era gravestones in the adjacent cemetery are striking for detailed photography. The best times to highlight the stone texture of the structure are before noon or after afternoon prayer; daylight provides the best angle at these times.

Hüseyin Pasha Mosque is an active place of worship. During your visit, be quiet and avoid disturbing the congregation during prayer times. You need to remove your shoes when entering, and female visitors are required to cover their heads. Since the mosque is located among narrow streets, it might be difficult to approach with large vehicles; parking in the center and walking is a more practical choice.

İzmit city center hosts many local restaurants and breakfast spots. After visiting the mosque, you can walk to the İzmit bazaar area and try İzmit meatballs and local delicacies. Fish restaurants, which are indispensable parts of Kocaeli cuisine, are also lined up along the gulf coast.
