TCG Gayret Museum

TCG Gayret is a destroyer ship received from America on May 10, 1946, and served actively in the Turkish Naval Forces for many years. After completing its duty, it was converted into a museum and anchored on the Izmit coast; today, it is open to visitors along with the Hızır Reis submarine under the Izmit Museum Ships Directorate. Its status as one of the pioneering examples of a warship being transformed into a museum in Turkey gives it a special place.

Inside the ship, there are exhibitions on maritime history and a presentation center. Tours are not individual but conducted in groups accompanied by military personnel. This arrangement ensures that every visitor learns about the ship's technical details and Turkish maritime history directly from the source.

The museum is open every day except Mondays from 09:00 to 17:00. Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) are the best times to enjoy the gulf coast and avoid crowds. During the summer months, especially on weekends, the density significantly increases due to school groups and families.

You must make an appointment before visiting. Determining your visiting day in advance and making a reservation eliminates the possibility of waiting at the door.

TCG Gayret Museum is located on the Izmit coastline, on Oramiral Salim Dervişoğlu Street, right next to the Yelken Kulübü (Sailing Club). It is within walking distance from the city center.

Those coming by private car can use the Istanbul-Izmit Road or Kocaeli Çayırova Road. You can reach the coast by municipal buses from Izmit bus station and then take a short walk to the museum. Finding parking on the coastal strip is relatively easy on weekdays; it can be difficult on weekends.

For those who only want to visit TCG Gayret, 45-60 minutes may be sufficient. If you include the Hızır Reis submarine right next to it, the total time increases to 1.5-2 hours. Since navigating the narrow corridors of the submarine is an interesting experience in itself, we recommend that those with time see both.

After visiting the museum, you can take a short walk along the coastal strip or relax in nearby cafes. It is an ideal stop for a half-day program.

The best external photo of the ship is taken from the coastal promenade. Wide-angle shots using the Izmit Gulf as a background yield very good results in the morning light. Compositions framed with the Hızır Reis submarine are also frequently preferred angles.

For shots looking out at the gulf from the ship's deck, it is advantageous to come before noon; the sun shines directly over the gulf, minimizing backlighting issues. The narrow corridors and engine room sections inside the ship may require a wide-angle lens.

There are various cafes and restaurants on the coastal strip where the museum is located and in its immediate vicinity. Izmit is a city known for its gulf fishing, so fresh fish restaurants stand out. You can have lunch with a gulf view at the establishments along the coast.

As you move towards the city center, you may come across shops offering pişmaniye, a sweet unique to Izmit. Pişmaniye is one of Izmit's most well-known local delicacies; most visitors buy it to take with them.

Since the museum is located within a military facility, visiting rules are stricter compared to other museums. Tours are conducted only with military personnel as guides and in groups; individual wandering is not allowed. Making an appointment before visiting is mandatory; otherwise, you risk being turned away at the door.

There are narrow stairs and low passages to reach some sections inside the ship. Access is therefore very limited for wheelchair users and those with baby strollers. Choosing comfortable, closed-toe shoes is important for both safety and comfort.
