Izmit Alaca Mescit Mosque

Alaca Mescit Mosque was built by Defterdar Abdüsselam for Mimar Sinan in 1524. This structure, considered among Sinan's early works, was built with masonry walls on a rectangular plan. With the addition of the last congregation area, the two side and rear facades gained a wooden-eaved appearance.

The 'hedgehog' minaret is the most striking element of the mosque from the outside. Inside, tile decorations reflect the unique character of the structure. The area where the mosque was built is located on the ruins of the Byzantine-era Justinian Palace; this gives the structure the characteristic of bearing the traces of two different civilizations layered on top of each other.

Alaca Mescit Mosque can be visited throughout the year. Spring (April–May) and autumn (September–October) months are the most comfortable periods for exploring Izmit on foot. Since the mosque may be crowded during Friday prayer times, morning hours or afternoon offer a calmer environment for those wishing to examine the architecture.
