Kızlarağası Han

Kızlarağası Han stands out as the largest and best-preserved of Izmir's hans. Built in 1744 by Hacı Beşir Ağa, the structure showcases one of the most striking examples of Ottoman commercial architecture in Izmir. With its two-story structure, six separate gates, and spacious courtyard in the middle, it carries strong traces of the commercial life of an era. The Çuha and Cevahir Bedestens located next to it are also integral parts of the building complex. Today, the shops sell handicrafts, carpets, leather products, and souvenirs, while a small cafeteria in the courtyard offers visitors a place to rest.

Hacı Beşir Ağa, who commissioned the han, served as Darüssaade Ağa in the Ottoman palace during the reigns of both Sultan Ahmet III and Sultan Mahmud I. Completed in 1744 according to the date on its construction inscription, the han remained at the center of Izmir's commercial life for centuries; with the growth of Kemeraltı Bazaar, it became the heart of the bazaar. The structure, which carries the typical features of Ottoman han architecture, with its courtyard plan and two-story arcades, has largely survived intact to the present day.

During these seasons, Izmir's temperature is milder, making walking around Kemeraltı much more enjoyable. In the summer months, the bazaar can be quite hot and crowded in the afternoon; preferring the early morning hours provides both a cooler environment and a calmer shopping experience. Tourist density increases on weekends, while a much more relaxed visit can be made on weekdays.

The han is located in one of Izmir's most central points, in the Konak district. You can reach the han by entering Kemeraltı Bazaar from Konak Square and walking for approximately 5-10 minutes. To reach Konak, you can use buses or dolmuş from İZBAN's Alsancak or Basmane stations; Izmir metro's Konak stop is also nearby. If you come by car, parking in the car parks around Konak and walking is the most practical option, as the narrow streets of Kemeraltı are not very suitable for vehicle traffic.

From there, enter Kemeraltı to reach Kızlarağası Han; do some shopping and take a coffee break in the courtyard. In the afternoon, you can continue strolling through the labyrinthine streets of the bazaar and end the day with the Agora Ancient City in Basmane.
