Old Smyrna Ancient City is a mound located in the Bayraklı district of İzmir, inhabited since 3000 BC. The remains of the Temple of Athena, city walls, and multi-layered settlement traces are witnesses of the ancient period.
Rising on a low mound in the Tepekule neighborhood of Bayraklı, Old Smyrna is the starting point of İzmir. This area, approximately one hundred acres, was a small peninsula surrounded by the sea to its west and south in ancient times. Today, it has become an archaeological site within the city, surrounded by urban development. The name of the mound, Hacı Mutzo, continues to live on in local memory.
The most striking structure in the area is the remains of the Temple of Athena. Athena Street, the Double Megaron, and the city wall remains are also among the elements visitors can see. The name Smyrna is thought to derive from the Amazon Queen Smyrna. Continuously inhabited since 3000 BC, the mound has a multi-layered settlement history extending from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period. When evaluated together with the Kadifekale city walls and the findings in the Namazgah district, the extent to which ancient Smyrna spread over a wide geography is better understood.

Guide's Note
Located right in the city center, easily accessible, Old Smyrna Ancient City stands out as a worthwhile stop that visitors to İzmir often overlook. Visitors state that they are impressed by the fact that the vaulted substructures and ancient water channels from the Roman period are still standing today. It is also noteworthy that water still flows through some channels. The high Corinthian columns and the general scale of the area concretely make one feel the historical importance of the city.
Observations in multiple comments indicate that the area is not sufficiently known even among İzmir residents; this suggests that the place offers a calmer and undiscovered atmosphere than expected. The visit duration can be kept short; since the area is relatively small, it can be easily explored in a few hours. The entrance fee is also found to be proportionate to this duration.
However, some recurring practical complaints from visitors should also be considered:
- Entry time and closing information: There are complaints that the last entry time is confused with the closing time; it is recommended to verify current hours before planning your visit.
- Lack of signage: It is stated that the entrance point to the area is not sufficiently marked, making it difficult to find your way in the surrounding streets.
- Insufficient information: It is emphasized that the explanatory information boards next to the exhibited artifacts and structures are inadequate, which weakens the cultural experience.
Best Time to Visit
The most suitable periods to visit Tepekule are April-May and October-November. During these months, İzmir's temperature has not yet reached oppressive levels or has started to drop. Since shaded areas on the mound are quite limited, visiting in mid-summer can be truly exhausting. If you are coming in July-August, prefer the early morning hours; do not forget to bring plenty of water and sunscreen.
How to Get There?
İzmir's public transportation network makes reaching Tepekule quite easy. Take the İzmir Metro to Bayraklı station; from there, you can reach the area in a few minutes by taxi or dolmuş. City bus lines also operate regular services to Bayraklı. If you are coming by private car, simply type 'Tepekule Mound' or 'Old Smyrna Bayraklı' into your navigation; public transport might be a more practical option as parking space is limited in the vicinity.
Get to Know the Area: From Mound to Temple
Tepekule Mound, with its length of 370 meters and width of 220 meters, is a relatively modest area; however, the layers of history it contains are extremely rich. Traces of settlement dating from the Bronze Age to the Hellenistic period have been unearthed during excavations. The Temple of Athena is the most prominent structure in the area and dates back to the 7th century BC. Athena Street and the Double Megaron structure, located near the temple, are also worth seeing during your visit.
It should be remembered that ancient Smyrna was not only limited to Tepekule. The city walls at Kadifekale and the findings in the Namazgah district are also part of the same ancient city. For those who want to follow the traces of ancient Smyrna in İzmir, Tepekule serves as a starting point.
Photo Spots
The stone blocks and column bases of the Temple of Athena yield powerful photographs, especially in the morning light. Wide-angle shots taken from the top of the mound towards the urban fabric of Bayraklı and the İzmir Gulf in the distance can also produce interesting results. Information panels around the excavation areas and cross-sections showing archaeological layers make good subjects for documentary photography. The golden hour before sunset highlights the texture on the stone surfaces.
What to Eat Nearby?
The number of tourist restaurants immediately around Tepekule is limited; you can find various eateries and cafes as you head towards Bayraklı district center. For those who want to taste the indispensable flavors of İzmir cuisine such as boyoz, kumru, and olive oil appetizers, the local restaurants in Bayraklı are a good option. For a more comprehensive İzmir dining experience, it would be more logical to go to Alsancak or Kemeraltı.
Suggested Itinerary: A Day in the Footsteps of Ancient Smyrna
For those who want to trace the footsteps of ancient Smyrna in İzmir in a single day, the following itinerary might be useful: Visit Tepekule Mound early in the morning, then climb up to Kadifekale to see the ancient city wall remains and the gulf view. In the afternoon, take a walk through the historical texture of Kemeraltı Bazaar and complete the day at the Agora Open Air Museum. This route allows you to experience İzmir's history from different periods all at once.
Things to Know Before Visiting
The area is an open-air archaeological site; the ground can be uneven and stony. Comfortable walking shoes are essential. Shade on the mound is extremely scarce, so a hat and a water bottle should definitely be with you to prevent sunstroke. It is forbidden to touch or climb on excavation areas and historical building remains. Since visiting hours and entry conditions may change, it is a good habit to check the current information from the İzmir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before you go.
