Gülhane Park is a historical park of approximately 9.7 hectares in Istanbul's Fatih district, formerly the outer garden of Topkapı Palace, opened to the public in 1912; entry is free.

Gülhane Park is a historical park located in Istanbul's Fatih district, stretching between Alay Köşkü and Sarayburnu, covering an area of approximately 9.7 hectares. This green space, used as the outer garden of Topkapı Palace during the Ottoman period, was opened to the public in 1912. It is rumored to have taken its name either from the building where rose jam (gülbeşeker) was made for the palace or from its rose gardens; both narratives demonstrate how intertwined the park was with Ottoman palace culture.

One of the most important documents in Turkish history, the Tanzimat Edict, was proclaimed on November 3, 1839, right within this park. Therefore, Gülhane is not just a recreational area but also a vibrant historical stage. Within the park, there are historical traces in layers, such as the Column of the Goths from the Roman period, the Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam, and the remains of St. Paul's Orphanage.

Guide's Note

Gülhane Park

Gülhane Park is a frequently preferred, free-entry green space for those looking to escape Istanbul's busy pace. Visitors appreciate the park's spacious area, ancient trees, and numerous benches. The calm atmosphere created by bird songs and fountain sounds, in particular, provides a suitable environment for both families and groups of friends. It is also possible to reach sea views from the upper parts of the park.

While some visitors find the park relaxing and refreshing, others report mixed impressions regarding maintenance and cleanliness. Some commend the work of the cleaning staff, while others note that trash bins are not emptied and general maintenance is insufficient. There are also evaluations suggesting that the park is more of a pleasant stop if you are in the vicinity, rather than a "must-see" destination.

  • Maintenance deficiencies: Multiple visitors state that the park is not well-maintained enough, and the flowers and vegetation are insufficient.
  • Trash bins: Some visitors have noticed that trash bins are not emptied regularly.
  • Direction signs: There is feedback that the internal signage in the park is inadequate.
  • Homeless individuals: A few visitors mention an uncomfortably high concentration of homeless people in the park.
  • Fountains: It has been observed that the fountains in the ponds are not working.

Best Time to Visit

While every season offers a reason to visit Gülhane Park, April and May are undoubtedly the most magical period. Every year, as part of the Istanbul Tulip Festival, the park's slopes and paths are adorned with thousands of tulips; during this time, those who arrive early in the morning avoid the crowds and capture the most vibrant colors. From mid-May, roses begin to bloom, creating a scene worthy of the park's name.

In summer, the park's shaded paths are a good option to escape the heat, although tourist density significantly increases. September and October are ideal for cooler weather and when the yellow-orange leaves transform the park into a completely different atmosphere. Winter visits are also possible; a snow-covered Gülhane occasionally offers one of Istanbul's most striking photo opportunities.

How to Get to Gülhane Park

The easiest transportation option for the park is the T1 tram line. The tram coming from either Kabataş or Bağcılar will drop you off directly opposite the park's main entrance at the Gülhane stop. Being on Istanbul's tourist axis, it is also easily accessible on foot from Sultanahmet, Sirkeci, and Eminönü.

For those using Marmaray, Sirkeci station is the closest stop; it's just a few minutes' walk from the station exit towards Alemdar Caddesi. If you are coming by private car, finding parking in the historical peninsula can be difficult; we recommend researching nearby paid parking options in advance. Taxis or app-based ride services can also be preferred; simply specify Alemdar Caddesi, Gülhane Park entrance as the address.

Photo Spots

Gülhane Park is practically an open-air studio for photography enthusiasts. The hill towards Sarayburnu is the most well-known spot to capture the Bosphorus, the Üsküdar skyline, and the Maiden's Tower in a single frame; at sunset, this place is almost always bustling with photographers.

In spring, shots using the Topkapı Palace walls as a backdrop in front of the tulip beds are extremely impressive. The trees around the Column of the Goths create a dramatic depth, especially in autumn. The plane tree grove within the park also offers magnificent photos during hours when light filters through the tree branches. If there is fog in the early morning, definitely do not miss this opportunity.

What to See in the Park

The Column of the Goths is the oldest remnant in the park. Dating back to the Roman period, this column is considered one of the oldest standing monuments in Istanbul. Nearby, the remains of St. Paul's Orphanage bear traces from the Byzantine era.

Rising to the left of the park entrance, the Alay Köşkü (Procession Kiosk) is an elegant structure from which Ottoman sultans watched official parades; it offers a magnificent view even from the outside. The Istanbul Museum of the History of Science and Technology in Islam within the park has an interesting collection that illustrates the contributions of the Islamic world in science and engineering with dioramas and model tools. Please note that a separate entrance fee is required for the museum. As you walk towards the Sarayburnu end of the park, you reach a wide viewing platform opening to the Bosphorus.

Food and Drink

There are various cafe and buffet options within and immediately around the park. The cafe on the Sarayburnu side, in particular, is a nice stop for those who want to enjoy tea with a Bosphorus view. In warm weather, you can continue your walk by buying ice cream or simit from street vendors inside the park.

For a more comprehensive dining experience, we recommend heading to the Sirkeci and Eminönü districts, which are a few minutes' walk from the park. Historic fish sandwich boats, meatball restaurants, and eateries serving traditional Turkish cuisine are concentrated in this area. If you head towards Sultanahmet, keep in mind that tourist prices may be slightly higher.

Things to Know Before Visiting

Since the park is free and largely accessible at all hours, visitor density can be quite high, especially on weekends and during the tulip festival. Early mornings offer both a calmer experience and better photographic light.

Remember that separate entrance fees are required for museums within the park, and their operating hours may differ from the park's general hours; it is recommended to check current hours before your visit. For families with children, the park has seating areas and ample shade; stroller use is generally suitable. For those planning to visit with Topkapı Palace, these two venues are within walking distance of each other and can be visited on the same day.
