Büyükada Nature Park

Although Büyükada Nature Park is open for most of the year, the months of April, May, and October offer the most enjoyable experience. In spring, the pine forests turn a fresh green, the weather is at an ideal temperature for hiking, and the island has not yet reached its summer crowds. In late September to early October, the sea is still suitable for swimming; moreover, as the days shorten, visitor density significantly decreases.

In July and August, the island and park can be quite crowded. The only way to reach the park is to first get to Büyükada. After disembarking at the island pier, island minibuses numbered BA-2 and BA-4 provide transportation to points near the park. Renting a bicycle is both the most popular and most liberating option; there are numerous bicycle rental points around the pier. Since private motor vehicles are prohibited on the island, phaetons continue to be a traditional alternative.

After arriving on the island, it is recommended to start from the pier square and head towards Dilburnu. As you enter the paths through the pine forest by bike or on foot, the city noise quickly fades away. Following the monastery ruins and traces of old Greek structures in the inner parts of the park adds a historical dimension to the route.

The most rewarding viewpoints are located in the higher sections of the park; from here, the Marmara Sea, Heybeliada, and Burgazada can be clearly seen. After a break at the picnic areas, it is possible to go down to the beach section for a swim. On the streets near the island pier, you will find fish restaurants, small cafes serving pastries and gözleme, and ice cream shops. Especially on weekends, restaurants can get crowded, so making a reservation in advance during busy periods is advisable.

Since Büyükada Nature Park is a 1st Degree Natural Protected Area, all actions that could harm nature are strictly prohibited. Lighting fires outside designated picnic areas is absolutely forbidden; always carry your trash with you or dispose of it in designated bins.

A motor vehicle ban is in effect on the island, so you should plan your transportation accordingly. If you plan to rent a bicycle, arriving early, especially in summer, will help you find one before they run out. Since there is an entrance fee to the park, it will be practical to carry cash with you. The terrain on some paths in the park can be uneven; it is recommended to wear comfortable walking shoes.
