Acısu Rock Church in Bulancak, Giresun, is a two-story Byzantine-era structure carved into rock within a hazelnut orchard, featuring three chapels with independent entrances and free admission with owner permission.
Acısu Rock Church is hidden within a hazelnut orchard in the Bulancak district of Giresun, approximately 2 kilometers from the district center. The structure takes its name from the nearby mineral water spring. Locals also call this place Horse Cave or Acısu Cave because the ground floor was used as an animal shelter in the past. Carved into the western slope of the rock mass, the structure extends in a north-south direction and consists of two floors with independent entrances. There are no stairs or passages between the floors. Each floor stands as a separate space on its own.
The ground floor consists of three chapels entered through a cradle-vaulted iwan-shaped door on the north facade. The first section in front of the entrance has a circular apse with a diameter of 85 centimeters and a round arched window; there is a small niche carved into the north wall for worship items. The middle section is wider than the others. No ornamentation or inscriptions have been found on it, which makes the precise dating of the structure difficult. Researchers point to the Early Byzantine Period, while some sources indicate the early Christian period.
The structure was registered with a decision by the Trabzon Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board in 1990. Being one of the rare examples of rock-cut architecture in the region makes it an interesting stop for travelers interested in historical textures. Since it is on private property, it may be useful to get information from the garden owner or local headman before visiting.
Guide's Note
Best Time to Visit
Since the structure is outdoors, within a hazelnut orchard, spring and summer are the most comfortable times to visit. In winter and autumn rains, the dirt road within the orchard becomes slippery, so expect your shoes to get muddy. During the hazelnut harvest season (August-September), orchard owners may be more actively involved with the land. Asking for permission before visiting is more crucial on those days.
How to Get There?
Follow the road from Bulancak district center towards Erdoğan village. The road passes west of İnçüvez Stream, and the church is located in the hazelnut orchard approximately 300 meters west of this stream. By private car, it's about 2 kilometers from the center, so a short drive. Searching for 'Acısu Kaya Kilisesi' on Google Maps and using navigation is the most practical way; for the last 100-200 meters, it's a garden path, so you may need to leave your car by the roadside and walk.
Bulancak and Giresun City Center Connection
Since Bulancak is a district close to Giresun city center, it is possible to fit the church visit into the same day as other stops in the city center. It forms a route that can be planned along with places like Giresun Castle, the Virgin Mary Rock Temple, and Taşbaşı Park on the coastline. Transportation from Bulancak center to Giresun is short by shared taxi (dolmuş) or private car.
How Much Time Should You Allocate?
Since the structure itself is small, the visit takes 20-30 minutes. However, it's good to allow a little more time for walking in the orchard and taking photos. It can be considered as part of a one-day itinerary planned with Giresun center. It does not require dedicating a full day on its own.
Things to Pay Attention To
The church is located within a private hazelnut orchard, so it is important to be respectful when entering the property and, if possible, ask permission from the garden owner. Since there are no protective landscaping or barriers around the structure, it is important not to climb on the rock surfaces or damage the carved sections. The ground can be damp and slippery, so step carefully, especially when entering the interior.
Photo Spots
The iwan-shaped entrance on the north facade is the most preferred shot as it clearly shows the cradle vault form. Inside, the apse niches and round arched windows create an interesting contrast with the light filtering in from outside. Wide-angle shots looking at the rock from among the hazelnut trees in the orchard also effectively convey the structure's integrated position with nature.
Things to Know About the Structure
There is no inscription on Acısu Rock Church indicating its construction date, so its precise dating is debated. Some sources point to the Early Byzantine Period, while others indicate the early Christian period. The structure does not contain any decorative elements, exhibiting a simple and functional rock-cut architecture. Although it was protected in 1990, it is currently in a dilapidated state and not used for active worship.
