Karacahisar Castle is a Byzantine castle located on a plateau by the Porsuk River in Eskişehir's Odunpazarı district, conquered by Osman Gazi in 1288; it was the first conquest of the Ottoman Empire.
Karacahisar Castle rises on a plateau along the Porsuk River, approximately 7 kilometers southwest of the Eskişehir city center. Noteworthy for its walls measuring approximately 200x300 meters, the castle is a typical example of military settlements from the Middle Byzantine Period, known as "Kastron" or castle towns, due to its architectural features. These types of settlements, which began to take shape in the 7th and 8th centuries, were established for defense against Persian and Arab raids; by the 11th-12th centuries, they largely came under Seljuk rule. During this period, Karacahisar served as a border between Byzantium and the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate, and the castle's tekfur (Byzantine lord) maintained its existence by paying taxes to the Seljuks for a time.
The castle's true historical importance begins with its conquest by Osman Gazi in 1288. After settling in Söğüt, Osman Bey broke the hostile stance of the Karacahisar tekfur and captured the castle, settling Turks in Karacaşehir at its foothills. The appointment of a qadi (judge) and imam (prayer leader) to the region for this rapidly growing community is considered among the first administrative steps in the founding process of the Ottoman Empire. The hammam structures within the castle are among the elements that particularly attract visitors' attention. The view, according to the common opinion of those who can climb to the plateau, is worth all the effort.

Guide's Note
When to Visit?
The best time to visit Karacahisar Castle is during the months of April-June and September-October. During these months, the weather is neither too hot nor too cold; the walk up to the plateau is more comfortable. In summer, the sun can be quite scorching in the open area at 1010 meters altitude. In winter, the paths can become slippery and challenging.
How to Get There?
The castle is located approximately 7 kilometers southwest of Eskişehir city center, near Karacaşehir Mahallesi in the Odunpazarı district. It is possible to reach the neighborhood by car; however, some roads are closed with barriers due to the surrounding NATO base. Visitors report that navigation sometimes directs them to closed roads. Therefore, it is very important to check the current access status from local sources or the Eskişehir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism before you go. To reach the castle, you need to climb a steep path, circumventing the military area.
Things to Know Before Visiting
Access to Karacahisar Castle offers a very different experience from a standard tourist spot due to the presence of a military area. According to visitor comments, special permission may be required to climb to the castle; some roads are kept closed with "Military Zone - No Entry" signs. Visitors who manage to reach the castle usually use the steep path next to the sheep-goat shelter. This path is physically challenging and therefore not suitable for the elderly and children. Be careful of the possibility of encountering shepherd dogs in the surrounding lands. Before your visit, we recommend calling the Eskişehir Provincial Directorate of Culture and Tourism to learn about the current access conditions.

At sunset, the light on the plateau creates a particularly favorable atmosphere for photography.

After your visit, you can return to the Odunpazarı district and explore Eskişehir cuisine in the historical bazaar and its surrounding restaurants. Çibörek and tarhana soup are among the city's prominent flavors. It is recommended to take enough water and snacks with you when going to the castle.
History and Importance
Karacahisar represents one of the most symbolically important points in Ottoman history: it holds the title of the first castle conquered by the Ottoman Empire. A typical example of castle towns that emerged as military cities of the Middle Byzantine Period in the 7th and 8th centuries, Karacahisar served as a border between Byzantium and the Anatolian Seljuk Sultanate for many years. The castle's tekfur maintained its existence by paying taxes to the Seljuks. After Osman Bey settled in Söğüt, the tekfur's hostile attitude turned into conflict, and in 1288, the castle fell into the hands of Osman Gazi. The settlement of Turks in Karacaşehir at the foothills of the castle and the appointment of a qadi and imam to the region are considered the first administrative arrangements of the Ottoman Empire. In this respect, Karacahisar is regarded not just as a castle, but as the place where the story of a state's foundation began.
How Much Time Should Be Allocated?
Half a day is sufficient for Karacahisar Castle, but if you want to comfortably explore the walking path and the inside of the castle, calculating 2-3 hours would be more realistic. If you combine the visit with the historical houses and bazaar of Odunpazarı, a program close to a full day might emerge. Since the climb to the castle is physically tiring, there's no need to rush; you can relax on the plateau and enjoy the view.
