QUICK ANSWER

Gazi Mihal Mosque stands at the end of Talat Paşa Street, opposite the bridge bearing the same name. Above the stone gate on the north facade, there is a three-line inscription: it states that the mosque was built in 1421-1422, during the reign of Sultan Murad II, by Emiru'l-kebir Mihal bin Aziz. This name comes from the Mihaloulları family, known for their raider organization in the early Ottoman period. Evliya Çelebi visited here in 1653 and wrote that the mosque was on an island, a bright structure of the old style.

The building is entirely made of cut stone, with marble coverings in places. It is considered one of the typical examples of the zawiya mosque plan in early Ottoman architecture: a domed central sofa on the north-south axis, followed by the main prayer hall covered with a barrel vault. On both sides, there are tabhane rooms; these were once sections where travelers stayed and dervishes resided. In the five-section last congregation area, the central part is kept higher and covered with a dome, while the side sections have mirror vaults. The minaret is in the northeast corner, distinguished from other mosques in the city by its onion-domed body and stone cone.

After suffering disasters in the 19th century, the mosque underwent repairs in 1891-92 (Hijri 1309) and has largely preserved its original character to this day. Although it is within walking distance of Selimiye, its location slightly outside the city center keeps it away from the main tourist flow. This makes it a quieter stop for visitors.

About Gazi Mihal Mosque

The mosque takes its name from Gazi Mihal Bey, one of the prominent figures of the Ottoman raider organization. The Mihaloulları family was a dynasty that played an important role in the Rumelian raids during the pre-conquest and post-conquest periods; Mihal bin Aziz, mentioned in the inscription, is thought to be from this family. The structure is one of the rare examples that carries both the military and religious identity of its period.

Architectural Details and Photo Spots

The three-line inscription above the stone gate is one of the most striking details of the mosque. The moldings around the pointed arched gate and the low-arched entrance opening are worth examining closely. The onion-domed body and stone cone of the minaret create a different silhouette from the minarets of other mosques in Edirne. Shots taken from the bridge side show this detail more clearly.

Best Time to Visit

Daylight hours, especially before noon, are more suitable for seeing the texture of the stones and the letters of the inscription. Since the mosque is an active place of worship, it is appropriate to keep visits short during prayer times or postpone them until afterward.

Transportation

It can be reached by walking along Talat Paşa Street from the city center. It is approximately 1 kilometer from the Selimiye Mosque, but because it is a bit on the outskirts, it is often skipped on most tour routes. It appears right after you cross the Gazi Mihal Bridge.

What's Around

The Gazi Mihal Bridge directly opposite offers a historic crossing over the Tunca River. The area is also close to the Gazi Mihal Bath; it is possible to include all three in the same route when exploring this part of the historic peninsula.

Things to Note When Visiting

As it is an active mosque, appropriate clothing should be chosen when entering, and female visitors are expected to cover their heads. Since it is slightly off the main tourist route, it is useful to check current access and opening status before visiting.
