Birkleyn Caves

Birkleyn Caves are a karstic formation located in the Lice district of Diyarbakır, consisting of three interconnected caves. The Birkleyn water flowing through one of the caves is known as one of the branches that feed the Tigris River; with this feature, the region carries significant geographical and historical weight. The presence of Assyrian royal reliefs on its walls makes the caves valuable for those seeking much more than just natural curiosity.

These caves, on which academic circles have been conducting studies regarding their tourism potential in recent years, still maintain their characteristic as a calm and unique visiting point, untouched by mass tourism.

The most suitable periods to visit Birkleyn Caves are the spring (April-June) and autumn (September-October) months. During these periods, the weather is mild, and the roads generally remain accessible. The surrounding area retains its greenery, and the water flow inside the cave becomes more pronounced.

In summer, due to the harsh climate of Southeastern Anatolia, daytime temperatures can rise significantly; setting off early in the morning provides great convenience during this period. In winter, road conditions can become difficult in the mountainous terrain around Lice. Always check the weather and road information before your visit.

The most practical way to reach the caves is by private car. From Diyarbakır city center, follow the Diyarbakır-Bingöl highway to reach the Lice district; from there, directional signs will guide you to the caves. The total distance is approximately 92 km, and the journey takes an average of 1.5-2 hours.

While there are regular minibus services from Diyarbakır to Lice, you may need to arrange separate transportation from the district center to the caves. Therefore, car rental or private tour organizations might be a more comfortable option. Contacting a local guide or the district municipality before your visit will be helpful for obtaining current road and access information.

Birkleyn Caves offer many different frames for photography enthusiasts. The rock formations at the cave entrances and the play of light looking out from inside create impressive compositions. The section containing the Assyrian royal reliefs is particularly valuable for both documentary and artistic photography.

The small pools formed by the water flowing through the caves and the steep structure of the surrounding terrain also provide a backdrop for interesting nature photographs. The light hitting the cave entrances in the morning creates an ideal environment for the most dramatic shots. There are no food and beverage facilities immediately near the caves. There are local restaurants and small artisan cafe-restaurants in the Lice district center; it is possible to take a break here before or after your visit.

Characteristic flavors of Diyarbakır cuisine such as stuffed ribs (kaburga dolması), liver kebab (ciğer kebabı), and meftune can also be found in local establishments in Lice. If you are planning a long nature walk, bringing ready-made snacks and plenty of water is very important for a comfortable visit.

Birkleyn Caves can be planned as a day trip from Diyarbakır. You can set off early in the morning, arrive in Lice, visit the caves, and return to the city in the afternoon. When you calculate the travel time and the cave visit together, a full-day program emerges.

On the way back, a short break in the Lice district center to taste local delicacies and see the unique texture of the district offers a nice additional experience. For those who want to visit historical sites in the city center such as Diyarbakır walls or Hevsel Gardens on the same day, the evening hours will leave enough time.
